Event Planners Reporting More Bad Behavior Than Ever
Before at Events Says New BiZBash Survey
Dressing Inappropriately, Getting Overly Intoxicated
and Taking Too Many Gift Bags Among Top Pet Peeves

New York, New York - December 1, 2003 - Dressing
inappropriately, getting overly intoxicated and having
sex are just a few of the offenses guests are performing
at events lately. And, there’s a laundry list
of other offenses that event professionals are talking
about in the BiZBash Event Style Reporter,
which published a special report on guest behavior in
its Winter 2004 edition.
“Guests and their behavior affect an event's success,
so it's important for event planners to keep their eye
on this trend of guests behaving badly“ says Chad
Kaydo, editor in chief of the BiZBash Event Style
Reporter. “A well-planned party can be ruined
by a guest without manners.”
The article reports that guests find plenty of ways
to misbehave. In an exclusive survey of 430 event professionals
by BiZBash Media, 65 percent of respondents said they
felt guests are behaving worse now than five years ago.
Respondents reported seeing guest commit these infractions:
- Take more than one gift bag (noticed by 9 out of
10 respondents)
- Treat event workers poorly (noticed by 2 out of
5 respondents)
- Show up at event when they didn't RSVP (noticed
by 2 out of 5 respondents)
- Get overly intoxicated (noticed by 2 out of 5 respondents)
- Take more than one piece of food from a tray (noticed
by 2 out of 5 respondents)
- Talk through a performance (noticed by 7 out of
10 respondents)
- Show up with a group of unexpected guests (noticed
by 7 out of 10 respondents)
- Take centerpieces or other décor items without
permission (noticed by 7 out of 10 respondents)
- Have a loud cell phone conversation at an event
(noticed by 7 out of 10 respondents)
- Dress inappropriately—for example wear jeans
to a formal event (noticed by 3 out of 5 respondents)
- Cut in front of someone in a registration line
(noticed by 3 out of 5 respondents)
- Move a place card for a better seat (noticed by
1 out of 5 respondents)
- Dance in an overly suggestive way (noticed by 2
out of 5 respondents)
- Refuse to leave at the end of a party (noticed
by 3 out of 10 respondents)
- Insist on smoking inside a non-smoking event (noticed
by 3 out of 10 respondents)
- Have sex at an event (noticed by 1 out of 10 respondents)
Respondents reported other incidents of bad guest behavior:
a person urinating in a fountain, a guest throwing a 15-pound
cheese wheel at a banquet captain’s head and someone
stuffing beef tenderloin from a buffet into a shopping
bag.
Theft is also a problem. At a People magazine
party, someone tried to walk off with a life-size blow-up
of Ashton Kutcher.
Letitia Baldridge, former social secretary to Jackie Kennedy
and author, says, “It can’t get much worse.
With behavior like this, people will stop entertaining
altogether.”
