1. NEW YORK EVENTS RESUMING NEXT WEEK: From news editor Anna Sekula: Hurricane Sandy may have had a devastating impact on local events this week, but the disruptions appear less pronounced for next week.
Despite an evacuation order and taking on water during the storm, the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center was one of the first major venues to reopen, resuming operations late Tuesday evening to allow the ING New York City Marathon and Fitness Expo to set up in time for its Thursday-morning kickoff. All shows starting the week of November 5 will take place as planned, including Ad:Tech and the International Hotel, Motel & Restaurant Show.
“A surprising number of people are going forward with their events,” says Bentley Meeker, owner of the eponymous lighting and staging company based in Manhattan. “While we also have a few postponements, we have very little in the way of cancellations. 2. IN SOUTHERN JERSEY: From style editor Lauren Matthews: Kris Sumey, creative director of Event FX Productions and current president of ISES New Jersey South, reported Thursday that New Jersey shore towns like Ocean City, Ventnor, and Margate are submerged in water, sand, and debris, and remain under a state of emergency, along with Atlantic City, where the casinos remained closed Thursday. While safety is of primary importance, Sumey says the devastation has already been a huge loss for the event community on the barrier islands and shore cities that are experiencing enforced evacuations, since the down season is typically when businesses and vendors rely on events and meetings to stay in business. BOSTON AND WASHINGTON BACK TO NORMAL: From associate editor Jenny Berg and senior editor Melissa Ward Schorsch: Although Sandy made its presence known—closing businesses and canceling events early in the week—the worst of the storm had passed by Tuesday. As we head into the weekend, we’re hearing that things are pretty much back to normal. A Washington-based PR executive emailed: “Truthfully, our biggest headaches are not being able to get in touch with our New York contacts, most of whom have servers out, etc." http://bizba.sh/S8t7vb
4. DEALING WITH CANCELLATIONS: From managing editor Ellen Sturm Niz: As planners, vendors, and venues navigate event cancellations and postponements caused by Hurricane Sandy, they’re likely invoking force majeure contract clauses that reduce or eliminate the liability of one or both parties due to an extraordinary event or circumstance—such as an “act of God” natural disaster like a hurricane.
Our editors have heard most venues and vendors are being understanding and working with event planners and producers to figure out solutions.

MARATHON CONTROVERSY: The New York Times: “Amid intensifying criticism, New York Road Runners continued Thursday to prepare for the New York City Marathon with an abbreviated schedule of events leading to the race.” Critics say police, fire, and other public services should be focused on relief efforts. Mayor Michael Bloomberg says the impact will be minimal, and marathon chief executive Mary Wittenberg “said the race would be used as a platform to lift spirits and raise money.” N.Y.R.R. plans to donate $1 million, and the Rudin Family and ING, two sponsors, will donate a combined $1.6 million to storm relief. http://nyti.ms/Vf6KcW

Battery company Duracell brought a power-relief center to lower Manhattan and took its Rapid Responder through New York and New Jersey. Both allowed locals to charge phones and computers and get extra batteries for flashlights, radios, and the like. AdAge: http://bitly.com/TnnUym
Wedding magazine The Knot created a Facebook page this week to help brides whose wedding plans were disrupted. The magazine estimated that 2,300 weddings were put on hold. ELECTION NIGHT PARTY TICKETS: Campaign supporters of the president can get tickets for his election night party at McCormick Place in Chicago by working two shifts this weekend in the battleground state Wisconsin. CACTI DOMINATE DIFFA: From Chicago bureau chief Jenny Berg: Diffa's Dining by Design—an annual tabletop extravaganza that showcases vignettes designed by artists, fashion designers, and more—is at Chicago's Merchandise Mart through November 3. Last night's Cocktails by Design kicked off the three-day showcase, which has nearly 35 elaborate tabletops.
On display: lots of teeny cacti planted in layers of dirt and stone in Mason jars. Other naturalistic accents included branches, vessels filled with moss and other forest-floor plants, butterflies, seashells, and live fish. 3. C.M.A. STAGE SETS: Last night's Country Music Association awards were hosted by Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. Entertainment Weekly: “The show itself was rife with agreeably overblown production numbers including a reproduction of a French café for Taylor Swift’s fine song 'Begin Again' that looked as though it had been assembled from sets left over from an old Carol Burnett Showsketch. 4. TRADE SHOW NUMBERS: The Specialty Equipment Market Association trade show comes to an end today after kicking off earlier in the week with 2,250 exhibitors. BOSTON: The Langham Hotel has completed a $6 million renovation and has a new event space called the Grant Room. The 525-square-foot event space has a chandelier, ample lighting, and a 62-inch HD TV.
Southern Brazilian steakhouse chain Fogo de Chao will open its first Boston location today. Located in the Back Bay, the venue has six separate private dining spaces that can hold eight to 130 guests.
Towne Stove & Spirits will host an election night party with a screening of the night's events and Patrón cocktails.
The Boston Common Hotel and Conference Center will be redeveloped into a four-star, 220-room hotel replete with a gym, meeting space, and apartments.
CHICAGO: Drumbar, which hosts private events, has a new seasonal cocktail menu with heated “Tea Time” cocktails. Meant to be shared, the cocktails are served in glass teapots and are made with fresh teas, herbs, spices, and liquors.
Celebrity chef Favio Viviani will open Siena Tavern in River North early next year. The Italian restaurant will have a private dining room with a chef's table that seats 15; a two-way mirror in the room hides a 50-inch plasma TV that links to Apple TV.
Vermilion will team up with Olive Oil from Spain host “A Spanish A-Fare” on November 7. The evening includes a three-course meal with wine pairings and tips for cooking with olive oil from expert Alfonso J. Fernandez.
LOS ANGELES: Georgetown Cupcake will open in Los Angeles on November 17.
