Entertainment Tonight Emmy Party Amps Up Exclusivity With Shrunken Guest List, Venue Change

FROM LOS ANGELES
For Hollywood types, a good strategy is to gather no moss. And in the spirit of continual reinvention, Entertainment Tonight took its annual Emmy party sponsored by People to Vibiana—after hosting it for the last two years at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Like Disney Hall, Vibiana, an opulent former 19th century cathedral, is downtown, only minutes from the Nokia Theatre, where the Emmy ceremony took place. ET and The Insider executive producer Linda Bell Blue oversaw the party, with planning from the shows' communications vice president, Lisa Summers Haas, who Bell Blue credited with fielding the hands-on challenges and details with grace. The internal team again tapped Bounce Entertainment, headed by Carleen Cappelletti, to produce.
“We've had the party in many locations, and we thought it was time to move to a new place. [Vibiana] reminded me of Europe with all the mosaics and everything,” Bell Blue said. Summers Haas, who noted that TV Guide’s aannual party was cancelled this year, added, “It takes six months to plan this party, and six months ago, people were wondering if there was even going to be a party. Walt Disney Hall just did not seem right—it's grand and huge. But Vibiana—any time you walk through that door you immediately say, 'Oh my god.' It's so beautiful, so intimate."

White Horse, Money Tree Mark Industry Launch of Absolut Mango
|
A red carpet, a line of media and hospitality-industry folk, and a white horse in a glittery getup stood outside the Hotel Sax on Monday night. At the door, headset- and bindi-wearing staffers from All Terrain PR stood with clipboards in hand, ready to welcome some 600 guests to the industry launch of Absolut Mango, a vodka that will be available to the public in March.
According to Sarah Bessette, public relations manager at Absolut, the product's "In an Absolut World" tagline inspired the concept for the Chicago industry launch. "The central message to our flavored vodkas is 'in an Absolut world, taste comes naturally,'" Bessette said. "We only use natural flavors in our products." To underscore the real-fruit essence of the new vodka, Absolut tapped All Terrain to produce an event that would capture the spirit of the mango.

FROM NEW YORK
The first New York City Wine & Food Festival this weekend filled the meatpacking district—and some other areas—with celebrated chefs and foodies for a four-day celebration of all things culinary. Led by Lee Schrager, director of special events for Southern Wine & Spirits and founder of the South Beach Wine & Food Festival, this Northeast series was produced by Karlitz & Company and benefited the Food Bank for New York City and Share Our Strength.
Covering a variety of topics, the weekend-long fair included more than 70 individual seminars, panel discussions, food demonstrations, cooking classes, and large-scale tasting parties. And even with food squarely center stage, the biggest events of the festival—Burger Bash, Sweet, Chelsea Market After Dark, and Midnight Music and Munchies—also provided musical entertainment, from DJs and roaming performers in elaborate costumes to a coffee psychic and an appearance from Tom Colicchio singing and strumming a guitar.

Green Tie Ball Channels Rio With a Carnivale Theme (and Steamy Conditions)

Chicago Gateway Green, a nonprofit organization that aims to beautify the city with the planting of trees and flowers, held its 17th annual Green Tie Ball Saturday night. The event, which we ranked as the No. 1 benefit in our list of Chicago's Top 100 Events, has historically been held outdoors. Since last year's gala attendees endured temperatures in the 40s at Northerly Island, for 2008, planners chose Chicago Scenic Studio's 100,000-square-foot warehouse space to host the almost 3,000 guests the ball attracts. It turned out to be a rainy evening with temps in the 70s, so huge industrial fans throughout the space combatted the humidity.
"This is the first time Chicago Scenic Studios has hosted a party in its warehouse space," said event organizer Denise McGowan of McGowan Durpetti & Associates, referring to the set-design company's facility. "They were throwing an anniversary party for the company the night before, so they had to shut down production for the weekend anyway."

Following Kanye West's show at the United Center on Friday, some 400 V.I.P.s headed over to Absolut 100's after-party at West Loop nightclub Bon V. Throughout the rapper's Glow in the Dark tour, West has been collaborating with Absolut Vodka and New York-based event producers Strategic Group on a series of after-concert parties (including a stop in Washington) inspired by his current obsession with everything neon and by Absolut 100, the company's new premium vodka, which is packaged in a sleek black bottle.
"The after-parties were a collaboration between Absolut 100 and Kanye West," said Absolut public relations manager Sarah E. Bessette. "We worked closely to determine the venues, DJs, decor, and other design elements to ensure we were re-creating the Glow in the Dark theme, hence the reason we used neon colors. Working with such a creative visionary like West sparked a lot of great ideas, including the neon/futuristic costumes the dancers wear."

IFC Concert Bridges South by Southwest's Film and Music Festivals

FROM AUSTIN, TEXAS South by Southwest kicked off last Friday and runs through Sunday, bringing hordes of film and music lovers to Austin, as well as hundreds of bands, filmmakers, and corporate (party-hosting) entities. This year, IFC, a longtime sponsor of the festival, sought to bridge the gap between the more low-key film festival and the highly popular music portion with a party that could appeal to both sets and introduce the channel's brand to music fans. The Crossroads event, featuring Yo La Tengo and My Morning Jacket, kicked off the music festival to a packed crowd on Tuesday night at the local landmark live music venue the Parish.
Given the nature of SXSW, which has long been a source of new and upcoming musical talent, the IFC event team had to decide which kind of acts they wanted to book. “We considered classic, established acts as well as newer ones,” said Lauren Burack, vice president of promotions and events at IFC. “At the end of the day, the one-two punch of My Morning Jacket and Yo La Tengo was too tempting to pass up. Both are established bands with fiercely loyal fan bases, and they embody the essence of the SXSW music scene.”
