Art Chicago, Chicago’s longest-running contemporary art exposition, took place in various venues throughout its 15 years, but found a home at the Merchandise Mart in 2006. The 2008 incarnation, which ran from April 25 to 28, brought together 180 art galleries from 56 cities around the world to showcase the work of more than 2,000 artists. Artropolis, the umbrella event that brings together five simultaneous art shows at the Mart, including Art Chicago, the International Antiques Fair, and Next, was introduced in 2007.

The Merchandise Mart's north lobby became a design-focused event space for the opening of the second-annual DreamRooms exhibition, a series of nine living spaces created by interior designers who have showrooms at the Merchandise Mart Design Center, on Thursday, April 24. The event coincided with the opening for Artropolis, another exhibition at the Merchandise Mart made up of five separate art fairs.
"There was a lot of buzz and excitement surrounding Artropolis and DreamRooms," said Merchandise Mart director of meeting planning and special events Nancy DeBiasi. "The preview party offered the designers and showrooms that participated in DreamRooms a chance to show friends, family, colleagues, and guests their work."
Some 400 guests, including designers, showroom owners, and manufacturers, attended the V.I.P. cocktail reception that took that place from 5 to 7 p.m., while an additional 1,100 people came to see the open-to-the-public exhibit, which stayed open until 10 p.m.

For the second-annual Bowler Hat Art Party, luxury lifestyle publication Factio Magazine eschewed its inaugural location (the artifact-filled Primitive) for a decidedly raw event space, the new En-Vent in the West Loop. For publisher Henrique Kerch and editor in chief Melissa Maynard, the entire purpose of the party is to show off Chicago's art talent during Artropolis, the high-profile international art exhibition that opened on Friday and runs through today at the Merchandise Mart.
"Our goal is to be the hottest event during Artropolis," Kerch said. On Friday night, more than 500 guests attended the art party, which gets its inspiration from "The Man in the Bowler Hat," the iconic surrealist painting by Rene Magritte.
