In the News: Low-Key Event Sponsorships Thrive, Victoria's Secret Show Returns to New York
|
Corporate Sponsors Take Subtle Approach: Sponsorships are still present at major events, but some companies are going to extreme lengths to ensure people don't notice. Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, and Morgan Stanley, for example, all had a presence at the 2009 U.S. Open golf tournament, but instead of branding tables, shirts, and tents with their logos, each of the banks slipped by under the radar. The banks paid $750,000 between them just on tables at a hospitality center off the 18th green, but declined any sort of signage. Many professionals suggest that this is indicative of the new importance of perception over actual spending. [NYT]
Victoria's Secret Show Heads Back East: After three years in other markets, the annual Victoria's Secret fashion show will return to New York this fall. No official date or venue have been selected, but the event is typically held in November and its most recent New York show was at the 69th Regiment Armory. The event will once again be broadcast several weeks later on CBS. [NYM]

Local-Food Expo Director Targets Sponsors With a Social Mission

Lloyd Yanis became the director of the FamilyFarmed Expo in 2005, and has spent the past three years building it up from a small, local trade show in a college cafeteria. Billed as a "celebration of local food and goods," the expo aims to forge a connection between farmers, food artisans, and consumers with cooking demos, business-to-business workshops, and an indoor farmers market.
This year's event takes over Chicago's downtown Cultural Center this Friday through Sunday, and Yanis expects some 5,000 attendees. On the eve of his biggest outing yet, we spoke to him about the recent upsurge of interest in local foods, how the expo has changed to accommodate more guests, and the process of finding like-minded sponsors.
How have the challenges of planning the expo changed?
When the expo first started, we certainly had—as we do now—an educational component and an exhibit component. But we have a completely different, much broader audience now. We have 5,000 people attending the expo this year. In the beginning, we weren't dealing with thousands of people and the logistics of ticketing or parking. So really, it's the same thing on on a bigger scale.

Holiday Party Hemorrhage Continues With Barclays Capital and CitiGroup
|
FROM NEW YORK
Investment firm Barclays Capital won't be celebrating the holidays this year. Executive committee member and chief operating officer Rich Ricci broke the news yesterday in a letter to the company’s staff, republished on Wall Street blog Dealbreaker.
Ricci praised the company’s resilience in the rough economy and its handling of the Lehman Brothers acquisition, but insisted there’s no way to celebrate as a firm or by department. “In the current difficult environment for our industry and for the economy as a whole, which affects not just financial services firms but our clients as well,” Ricci wrote, “it is not appropriate for us to do anything that might be seen as inappropriate by any of our stakeholders.”
