Casts of Wicked, Jersey Boys Respond to Prop 8 With Benefit Cabaret

Despite a blizzard warning, approximately 350 guests headed to Park West on Monday night for a two-act cabaret featuring cast members of the Second City and Broadway in Chicago shows Wicked, Grease, and Jersey Boys. The event, titled "Defying Inequality," raised funds for four gay-rights organizations through ticket sales and live and silent auctions.

Charlie Hagerty, a member of the Chicago Wicked ensemble, directed the cabaret and worked with his fellow cast members to plan the fund-raiser. Hagerty said that the passing of Proposition 8 was the event's "biggest motivator ... The theater community saw that something had to be said, so we spoke up by doing what we do best—putting on a show." Monday night's performance included improvised skits, show tunes, and choreographed pop-song performances. MORE >>

Julia Jankowski, events coordinator for the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago, spent two months planning Monday night’s event titled "Have the Time of Your Life: An Evening of Song and Dance With the Cast of Dirty Dancing." The event drew some 165 guests—including Chicago's first lady, Maggie Daley—and served as a relaxed grand-opening celebration for the Academy of Dance, Official School of the Joffrey Ballet.

The event’s centerpiece was a two-act performance that featured dancers from the ballet company and the Broadway in Chicago show, a collaboration which came about thanks to a longtime friendship between Kaitlin Hopkins (who plays Baby Houseman’s mother, Marjorie, in the touring company of Dirty Dancing) and Christopher Conway, executive director of the Joffrey Ballet. Further solidifying the link between the two organizations, several Dirty Dancing cast members are also former Joffrey dancers, including Britta Lazenga, who cohosted the evening’s performance. Local Tourist Destinations Dealing With Gas Woes
The price of gas and other necessities this summer has local tourist hotspots feeling the pinch, according to Crain's Chicago Business. After attendance numbers fell last year amidst rising costs, some attractions have taken action to combat further fall-offs in 2008. Tourist destinations such as Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, the Field Museum, and the musical Wicked at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts Oriental Theatre came up with creative marketing ploys to lure guests to make the trip.

At Six Flags, which is located some 40 miles from downtown Chicago, adult tickets that usually go for $54.99 are selling at children's ticket prices, $34.99. The amusement park is also offering buy-one-get-one-free ticket deals. In the case of Wicked, theater promoters Broadway in Chicago gave last week's ticket holders a $50 gas card. MORE >>

On Monday, bartenders working in the Auditorium Theatre’s lobby shook up martinis for some of Chicago’s most loyal theater patrons and the performers they pay to see. For the League of Chicago Theatres’ Showtime gala—held on a Monday night, when most theaters are dark, so that actors could attend—everyone from the resident cast of Jersey Boys to Saturday Night Live alum Tim Kazurinksy donned black-tie attire and headed to the downtown theater.

Getting actors to dress up on their night off (kind of like a busman’s holiday) was easy, according to gala chair Diana Martinez, who also serves as executive director of Aurora's Paramount Theatre. “First and foremost, this event is a fund-raiser for the League of Chicago Theatres,” she said. “But it’s also about networking. In the theater industry, everyone’s so busy. It’s hard for us all to get together. So events like this are funit’s nice for us all to see each other.” MORE >>
