Emmys Move Back to September 20 to Avoid Conflict With MTV VMAs
Just a few weeks after announcing a date change to September 13 to avoid broadcast competition with the NFL, CBS and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences have backed down on their move, opting to go with the original plan of a September 20 ceremony for the 2009 Emmy Awards. The partners cite a conflict with MTV's Video Music Awards as the reason for switching back.

"After we announced plans for September 13, MTV informed us they were locked into the same day for the Video Music Awards, with venue and sponsorship agreements in place," CBS executive vice president of specials, music, and live events Jack Sussman told Variety. "We had the flexibility to move; they didn't. It's best for the industry and the audience that these events not compete against each other."

CBS and MTV are corporate cousins of a sort; although CBS is no longer owned by Viacom, MTV's parent, both are controlled by Sumner Redstone. MORE >>

Like a lot of other film and television entities making a presence at New York Comic Con this year, Comedy Central’s debut at the young convention—to promote new action comedy Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire—hinged on a sampling of content and a discussion with the creators and stars. But since buzz did not precede the series as it did many others this weekend, the network decided to boost interest with a street team on the convention floor.

“Comedy Central has been involved with San Diego’s Comic Con in the past,” said the network's director of consumer marketing, Elissa Harman. “So we're really excited about finally getting involved with New York.” Harman chose to start that involvement with a guerrilla marketing team of eight women, dressed as the one of the show's main characters. She went with female lead “Anaka,” who just happens to wear skimpy battle gear à la Xena: Warrior Princess. “One of Krod’s targets is the Comic Con audience, and one of the best ways to reach them is through sexy girls dressed in costume,” Harman explained. Fanboys and fangirls flocked to the Jacob Javits Center last weekend to catch glimpses of upcoming films, buy new and rare merchandise, and mingle with their brethren at New York's four-year-old incarnation of Comic Con.

Quickly becoming a venerable rival to it's larger, more established San Diego predecessor, New York Comic Con has grown from 33,000 attendees in 2006 to an estimated 77,000 over it's three day run this month—a 15 percent increase from last year’s attendance. That dramatic growth has been buoyed by more involvement from television and film studios, which debut content and offer exclusive panels. MORE >>
