Factio Magazine Plans Art Chicago Party at Logan Square Mansion—Then Moves to West Loop Nightclub

Art Chicago, the city's largest annual contemporary and modern art fair, returned to the Merchandise Mart on Friday, kicking off a four-day run of exhibitions, speaking programs, and parties. Local fashion publication Factio magazine produced the fair's official opening-night after-party. Dubbed "Art Rocks," the event drew roughly 300 guests to the nightclub Lumen—a venue that planners settled on a mere two weeks before the event.

"We were initially going to do a much larger event at a raw space," said Melissa Maynard, Factio's editor in chief. "We had a great venue in line, the Stan Mansion in Logan Square," but then "a few problems presented themselves."

Topping the list of issues: the changing nature of this year's sponsorship. "Last year, it was really easy to pull on sponsors that wanted booths or other unique ways to present their brand," said Maynard. "For example, [luxury condo building] the Peshtigo set up stations where guests could view a short film" of their property. But this year, sponsors such as the Illinois Institute of Art and Islands of the World Fashion Week were more interested in simply showcasing their logos than creating roomy, interactive displays; liquor sponsor Corzo tequila "just needed a branded bar," Maynard said.

Factio Magazine Fancies EnVent and 4Art Inc.

Henrique Kerch is the publisher at Factio magazine, a position he has held since he and partner Melissa Maynard launched the Chicago-based fashion publication in 2002. Kerch began planning events for the magazine two and a half years ago, and Factio now holds two large initiatives annually—one in April that mixes spring fashions and art, and another in October to showcase fall looks—and produces boutique mini sales and magazine-issue launch parties throughout the year.

Venues: "We love to use raw spaces, and we have had events at two great spaces, EnVent and 4Art Inc. 4Art Inc. has great high ceilings and the kind of wonderful flooring that we look for; it is very New York warehouse-ish. EnVent is like a refurbished warehouse that has these wonderful wood columns. We had our Bowler Hat party there, and it can hold a good crowd of about 400 people."

Rentals: "All of our tables, linens, and glassware come from Tablescapes. I really like their selection, they have great prices, and they are always on time; I really have to thank them for that." MORE >>

Factio's Bowler Hat Art Party Celebrates Artropolis Opening Night

For the second-annual Bowler Hat Art Party, luxury lifestyle publication Factio Magazine eschewed its inaugural location (the artifact-filled Primitive) for a decidedly raw event space, the new En-Vent in the West Loop. For publisher Henrique Kerch and editor in chief Melissa Maynard, the entire purpose of the party is to show off Chicago's art talent during Artropolis, the high-profile international art exhibition that opened on Friday and runs through today at the Merchandise Mart.

"Our goal is to be the hottest event during Artropolis," Kerch said. On Friday night, more than 500 guests attended the art party, which gets its inspiration from "The Man in the Bowler Hat," the iconic surrealist painting by Rene Magritte. MORE >>
