CB Richard Ellis and Hearst Corporation Host Holiday Party for Retailers
Commercial realtor CB Richard Ellis and Hearst Corporation may not being throwing holiday parties for their respective employees this year, but that doesn’t mean they’ve forgotten to celebrate those who really matter during the economic downturn—potential clients. The New York Observer reported that the pair hosted a holiday event last night for retailers in town for the International Council of Shopping Centers’ national conference.

The publishing giant planned to open the doors to its Hearst Tower sky lobby from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. for the expected crowd of 300, but there was just one catch: Guests had to tour the building’s vacant retail space before getting access to the party. Hearst and CB Richard Ellis, which markets the ground floor of Hearst Tower, hoped visiting representatives from retailers like Barneys New York, Anthropologie, and Chanel might take an interest in the storefronts that have yet to find tenants in the two years since the building opened. Then, maybe, they can do some celebrating of their own.   —Michael O'Connell

Ax Falls on ABC News, Viacom, Marc Jacobs Holiday Fetes, While News Corp. Parties On
Dispatches from the great holiday party flush of 2008 continue. After word came last week that ABC News joined media groups like Hearst by dropping its annual bureau parties in New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, big celebrations for Marc Jacobs and Viacom officially fell off the schedule over the past 24 hours, while the rumored cancellation of the News Corps. party proved a bit of an overreaction.

In an email from Viacom heads Philippe Dauman and Tom Dooley published by Gawker, the duo took the release of the company’s third quarter results as an opportunity to drop the holiday-party bomb. The cancellation probably won’t upset too many staffers though: In lieu of divisional or corporate celebrations, Viacom staffers—at least those who are still around after this week’s anticipated round of layoffs—get an extra two days of vacation between December 22 and January 1. Lydia Hearst Claims Misrepresentation by The Post, May Still Love Parties

For anyone who read Sunday’s Page Six Magazine, the revelation that Lydia Hearst finds parties in these troubled economic times “excessive” probably wasn’t the most lighthearted way to start the week. Fear not! In emails to several blogs this morning, Hearst claims those words belong to someone else.

In the latest installment of “The Hearst Chronicles” column, the model, socialite, and sporadic journalist condemned the glut of lavish events of late, making a special point to call out her family’s own Hearst Corporation for its inability to curb parties even as the company shutters some of its titles. The New York Post hopped on this admission with a teaser item that ran in Friday’s Page Six suggesting a family feud erupted. MORE >>
