Macy's Hosts New Series of Events in Conjunction With Flower Show—and Most of Them Have Nothing to Do With Flowers

From April 5 through April 19, the Macy's Flower Show has the State Street store blanketed in color-blocked blossoms and filled with oversize flamingos. Throughout the promotion, daily events will include a cooking demonstration from the owner of the Meatloaf Bakery, a meet-and-greet with fashion and home designer Rebecca Moses, and—for the younger set—a personal appearance from a Smurf and Smurfette.
During past flower shows, "We focused on events that were all floral-related, including tours of the show and gardening demonstrations," said director of events Greg Moore. "We realized a couple of years ago that the Flower Show is a time when this store truly comes alive, and that it would be great to have a number of things for our customers to enjoy in addition to seeing the show, having lunch in the Walnut Room, and shopping. So we added entertainment, cooking demonstrations, kids' events, fashion shopping parties, and more."

Coty Launches Mobile Lounge to Promote Gwen Stefani Fragrances

FROM TORONTO
The four Harajuku girls Gwen Stefani employed for her 2004 solo tour weren't around to promote the new Harajuku Lovers fragrances in Canada—but they were emulated by models dressed in short skirts and pigtails as part of manufacturer Coty Prestige's traveling Harajuku Lovers Fragrance Lounge, which visited several locations in Toronto and Montreal from Thursday to Saturday. They also inspired Stefani's new fragrances, with each of the four girls, plus Gwen, representing one of the five scents.
"The fragrances are really fun, and we wanted to get the girls involved in the event," said Kim Husted, director of marketing at Coty Canada. The lounge—held in the Jam Van, a 24-foot vehicle designed for experiential marketing events—promoted the new scents in high schools, malls, movie theatres, and nightclubs in Toronto and Montreal over the three-day period. The mini tour started October 2 with a media preview.

O'Hare Runway Show Kicks Off Fashion Focus Chicago
|
First, the After School Matters benefit took place on a new airport runway, and now O'Hare International Airport will once again be the site of a large-scale event. Fashion Focus Chicago, a series of events showcasing the city's fashion talent, kicks off with a fashion show and installation at O'Hare on Friday.
In a partnership between the Chicago Department of Aviation and the Chicago Office of Tourism, "Chicago Fashion in the Airport" will feature several fashion shows that move to different terminals throughout the day while promoting the work of local designers. The on-site fashion exhibition will feature clothing displays and house a "fashion concierge," an information desk where visitors can inquire about Chicago’s shopping scene through October 10.

Macy's Gets Totally '80s for Glamorama's 10th Anniversary
|
Now in its 10th year, Macy's Glamorama (formerly a Marshall Field's tradition) took place on Friday night. As the lights dimmed in the Chicago Theatre at the start of the evening's fashion show, a theme became apparent: From a set backed with Pac-Man graphics to a soundtrack peppered with hits from Prince, George Michael, and Michael Jackson, an '80s influence was demonstrably at work.
Cyndi Lauper and MC Hammer headlined this year's show, treating the audience of 3,000 to live renditions of "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" and "U Can't Touch This"—respectively, of course—as models pranced out in designs from the likes of Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan, and Tibi. Event sponsors also found a presence in the spectacle, with video logos and a full-length Chevy commercial appearing on a scrim that covered the stage before the show. During the show, an actual Chevy Corvette (painted an era-appropriate shade of teal) descended onto the stage in a cloud of smoke, becoming a prop in one of the scenes.

On Saturday night the Special Olympics celebrated the 40th anniversary of its founding with a gala entitled "Inspire Greatness" at the Hilton Chicago. The event commemorated the first Special Olympics competition (a track-and-field and aquatics event for people with intellectual disabilities held at Soldier Field on July 19, 1968) that Chicago native Anne McGlone Burke, a pioneer in the field of recreational therapy, and friend Eunice Kennedy Shriver created along with the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation.
To plan the anniversary gala, Special Olympics event manager Suzi Berner said she started “with any partner or sponsor that truly understood what our organization is all about.” One year and 50 volunteers later, Berner and her team organized an event filled with reminders of the cause at hand.

1. Fashion Focus Chicago
Michelle Tan, Lara Miller, and Orlando Espinoza were just a few of the 100 local designers featured in last year’s October style showcase, presented by the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs. Designed to promote Chicago’s burgeoning fashion scene, the weeklong event features runway shows, shopping tours, seminars, and fashion installations. More than 35,000 people came out for the 2007 activities, which saw high-profile runway events in Millennium Park, while smaller events took place in a variety of venues across the city. Fashion Focus 2008 will be held in October.

Latin-Themed Flower Show Fills Macy's With (Surprise, Surprise) Flowers
|

Macy's looked to Latin America for inspiration for the store's spring flower show this year. Floranova, which opened at the flagship State Street store on March 13 and continued through March 30, featured various displays of flowers, plants, and artwork throughout the building. The annual free exhibition, which in past years has highlighted the gardens of France and England, works in conjunction with themed culinary events in Macy's Marketplace and spring fashion shows.
“We created a floral fiesta at State Street,” said Michelle Mesenburg, divisional vice president of marketing events and communication for Macy’s North. “We were happy to present the flowers, music, and art of these Latin cultures to Chicagoans.”
