On Friday night, guests in black-tie attire perched atop furry pink love seats at the Museum of Science and Industry's Columbian Ball. "One of our co-chairs referred to the lounge areas as our Austin Powers setups," said Denise Hicks, the museum's manager of campaign special events, before the gala. "The theme of the ball is 'A Celebration of You: Mind, Body, and Spirit.' It's based on our new permanent exhibition, 'You! The Experience,' which is very colorful and interactive, and we wanted that to play out throughout the evening."

Bold hues and '60s inspiration carried over from the museum's lounges to the dinner tent, which Heffernan Morgan decked with red, blue, yellow, and green strips of fabric. Designers also hung disco balls and chandeliers from the marquee that lead to the dinner area, and topped tables with bright floral arrangements and glowing light boxes. MORE >>

Museum of Science and Industry Kicks Off Black History Month With Earth-Themed Gala

On Saturday night, the Museum of Science and Industry kicked off Black History month with its annual Black Creativity gala. The fund-raiser drew approximately 850 guests and featured dinner, dancing, and a private peek at the museum's new "Green Revolution" exhibit, which celebrates African Americans' contributions to the green movement.

To underscore the exhibit's earth-centric theme, buffet stations at the strolling cocktail reception took on looks inspired by the elements of earth, water, and fire. Green moss, seashells, and red floral arrangements filled each respective area; the natural look continued in a dinner tent that spanned the museum's front lawn, where river rocks and branches accented white floral centerpieces at each table. On Saturday night, the Museum of Science and Industry's annual Columbian Ball (which we ranked among our top benefits in Chicago's Top 100 Events list) raked in more than $1.6 million dollars for the museum, despite the nation's current financial climate. Denise Hicks, the museum's manager of campaign special events, planned the ball dubbed "Unbelievable! 75 Years of Inspiration" in honor of the museum's 75th anniversary.

Though Hicks said that the state of the economy made finding sponsors "a little more challenging" than usual this year, the event ultimately landed principal sponsorships from companies such as Allstate, BP, and United Airlines. "What helped the most [with attracting sponsors] is who the co-chairs were," Hicks said. "[Our co-chairs] are well-known in the community and the city, and their involvement made people want to be a part of this event." (This year's co-chairs included Max and Jim Farrell and Mayor Richard Daley and his wife, Maggie.) MORE >>

1. Chicago Gateway Green’s Green Tie Ball
This rollicking annual outdoor event usually draws nearly 3,000 of the city’s young residents. Celebrity attendees, casino gaming tents, live music, and food from more than 65 Chicago restaurants are slated to be featured at the 2008 Green Tie Ball on September 13. Held at private event space Chicago Scenic Studios, the ball will be produced this year by Denise McGowan and Michelle Durpetti of McGowan Durpetti & Associates. The “Greenivale” theme will feature bands re-creating the sounds of Carnival in Rio. The 2007 ball raised $500,000. MORE >>

Museum of Science and Industry Announces Renovation Plans
The Museum of Science and Industry announced plans today to revamp 90 percent of its exhibits by 2011. The Chicago Tribune reported that the announcement also kicked off a $205 million fund-raising drive. These efforts coincide with the museum's 75th anniversary this year and are aimed at increasing school children's interest in science.

Taking advantage of new technology and display techniques, some of M.S.I.'s largest and most familiar exhibits will be revamped or changed entirely. New plans include a 40-foot tornado funnel, a photo display that projects how a subject will age in 20 years, and a three-dimensional heart model that will beat in rhythm with individual visitors' pulses.
