Notebaert Nature Museum's Auxiliary Board Hosts First Fund-Raiser

Friday night's Helios Bash marked the first event put on by the auxiliary board of the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, otherwise known as the Society of Urban Nature or—and this explains the name of the event— SUN. Drawing approximately 100 young professionals, Helios served as a fund-raiser for the museum's nature education programs.

Tony Williams, chair of SUN, headed up the event's 10-month planning process. In making arrangements for the evening, which overtook a terrace-equipped room on the museum's second floor and comprised cocktails, a dinner buffet, and DJ-driven dancing, Williams and his fellow board members focused on making environmentally friendly decisions. 1. Chicago Gateway Green’s Green Tie Ball
This rollicking annual outdoor event usually draws nearly 3,000 of the city’s young residents. Celebrity attendees, casino gaming tents, live music, and food from more than 65 Chicago restaurants are slated to be featured at the 2008 Green Tie Ball on September 13. Held at private event space Chicago Scenic Studios, the ball will be produced this year by Denise McGowan and Michelle Durpetti of McGowan Durpetti & Associates. The “Greenivale” theme will feature bands re-creating the sounds of Carnival in Rio. The 2007 ball raised $500,000. MORE >>

Green-Hued Butterfly Ball Touts Eco-Friendly Practices

This year's Butterfly Ball on Friday, a black-tie benefit for the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, used a natural choice of venues: the museum itself. In the atrium, sage tablecloths covered highboys during a mint-julep-fueled cocktail reception. Green balloons floated above the heads of raffle-ticket sellers (who had tied balloon strings to their wrists), helping them stand out from the black-tie crowd. In two large dinner tents set on the front lawn and upper-level balcony, green linens and wine glasses festooned the tables.

The color scheme underscored the evening's "living green in Chicago" theme. According to the museum's development manager, Kristin Lynch, the annual ball presents an opportunity to showcase accomplishments from the past year to "an audience of 600 corporate and civic leaders." This year, "we felt strongly about letting everybody know that we want to be the leader here in Chicago of eco-friendly practices and environmental education," she said. MORE >>
