Best Corporate Event Concept (Over $50,000)
Ellen DeGeneres's 50th Birthday Party
Submitted by Warner Brothers Special Events
To celebrate the TV host’s birthday and her move from NBC to Warner Brothers Studios, Telepictures Productions hosted a celebration that doubled as a segment for the comedian’s show. Organizers designed a vintage carnival and incorporated her favorite things, including dancing and games, as well as some celebrity guests. MORE >>

With Bullseye Bazaar, Chicago Gets Its First Target Pop-Up Shop
Target's Bullseye Bazaar

Target's Bullseye Bazaar, a pop-up shop that overtook 445 North Michigan Avenue from Thursday through Saturday last week, gave shoppers three days to check out the company's spring merchandise before it hit stores. With props such as fruit and veggie carts, hanging produce scales, and chalkboard signage, the 8,500-square-foot space was designed to resemble an outdoor market. Amid the summery tropes, rolling racks offered casual duds from Target's 2009 designer partners, Tracy Feith and Felix Ray. Home goods, maternity gear, cosmetics, and toys were also on display.

Though pop-ups aren't a new concept for Target—its first overtook a boat docked in New York's Chelsea Piers in 2002, and this past fall, Manhattan got four Bullseye Bodegas—last week's bazaar marked the first time the company has set up temporary shop in Chicago. "Chicagoans love Target, and we greatly value their business," said Joshua Thomas, a spokesman for the store. "This is a way to give back to the city through a fun promotion that engages our guests, while showcasing our designer partners and everyday essentials." MORE >>

Target Mimics London Market for McQueen Launch

Even without a brick-and-mortar presence in Manhattan, Target has always found creative and unexpected ways to set up temporary residence to showcase its latest designer collaboration. Last September, the department store created four "Bullseye Bodegas" for a slew of partners—from Converse and Liz Lange to Thomas O'Brien and John Derian—but this time around, the chain focused its efforts on one collection—an Alexander McQueen-designed line of clothing.

The chilly weather on Friday night didn't stop hordes of editors, bloggers, designers, and models from making the trek to SoHo's St. John's Center for the V.I.P. preview party. Decked out with clothing racks, commissioned artwork, changing rooms, and registers, the enormous warehouse space also served as the site for a two-day public shopping event on Saturday and Sunday. To tie into the heritage of the London-born designer and his inspiration for the line, production company OBO created street-vendor-style stalls modeled after London's famed Camden Market and a stage for British rock band the Duke Spirit. Wine & Food Fest Mixes Edible and Musical Offerings
The New York City Wine & Food Festival's Meatpacking Uncorked

The first New York City Wine & Food Festival this weekend filled the meatpacking district—and some other areas—with celebrated chefs and foodies for a four-day celebration of all things culinary. Led by Lee Schrager, director of special events for Southern Wine & Spirits and founder of the South Beach Wine & Food Festival, this Northeast series was produced by Karlitz & Company and benefited the Food Bank for New York City and Share Our Strength.

Covering a variety of topics, the weekend-long fair included more than 70 individual seminars, panel discussions, food demonstrations, cooking classes, and large-scale tasting parties. And even with food squarely center stage, the biggest events of the festival—Burger Bash, Sweet, Chelsea Market After Dark, and Midnight Music and Munchies—also provided musical entertainment, from DJs and roaming performers in elaborate costumes to a coffee psychic and an appearance from Tom Colicchio singing and strumming a guitar. Target Brings RedBall Project to Chicago

Kurt Perschke's RedBall Project, a site-specific installation that involves a 15-foot, inflatable red ball set against various urban backdrops, has traveled through cities like Barcelona and Sydney, and next Monday it will take up residence in Chicago. The traveling exhibition, sponsored by Target, is billed as a sculptural performance, with the giant red orb popping up at 15 different city sites, ranging from iconic (Millennium Park and the Chicago Cultural Center) to obscure (various alleys and bridges). Perschke has said that the essence of his project lies in the interaction between the ball and the viewer. By witnessing an unfamiliar object in familiar spaces, those who encounter the piece become participants in the work, giving new context to their surroundings. The installations continue through September 25.   —Jenny Berg

Two Aerial Theater Performances Take to the City Skies

A crowd congregated in Navy Pier's Gateway Park on Friday and Saturday night to catch performances by costumed and face-painted jesters from France's Compagnie Transe Express. Presented by the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, the free outdoor art spectacle, entitled Maudits Sonnants, continued the CST's ongoing World's Stage Series of international theatrical events. As The Chicago Tribune's theater critic, Chris Jones, wrote in a preview of Maudits Sonnants on Friday, this type of free public art event is more common in Europe and Australia.

Tall torches lit the Gateway Park perimeter, illuminating four 10-foot-tall metal structures attached to a 200-foot telescopic crane and featuring an elaborate metal framework outfitted with ropes, pulleys, and platforms. One by one, musicians and acrobats attached themselves to the edifice and began ringing bells, beating drums, and twirling around on trapezes as the human carillon lifted, with the city skyline and an almost-full moon as the backdrop. Target Transforms Raw Venue With Moving Collages for MTV After-Party

If MTV's demographic can be loosely defined as young and slightly irreverent, so can those words describe the demographic for consumers of the Converse One Star collection recently launched at Target stores. So for Target to host an unofficial MTV Movie Awards after-party last night in honor of the new collection seemed, ahem, right on target.

Target's events and marketing team tapped Cara Kleinhaut of Caravents to produce the party, which featured a fully customized, built-out setup on the Lot's plain Stage 7, meant to create an experience and a look that represented the indie-slash-youth demo that Converse courts. To that end, DJ Steve Aoki spun records for the hipster-heavy crowd of about 500, and M.I.A. performed a high-energy set in her signature genre-busting style and neon costumes. But the big story of the night wasn't just the colorful, crowd-pleasing performance; it was the venue's look, which was a highly visual, multimedia spectacle. MORE >>
