More Correspondents' Weekend Coverage: Bloomberg and Vanity Fair's Exclusive Party, Atlantic Media's Dinner, McLaughlin's Brunch, and More
|
FROM WASHINGTON
As in years past, parties of every kind and color—from movie screenings to exhibit openings to hangover brunches—surrounded this year's White House Correspondents' Association dinner. Here’s a wrap-up of the weekend's attractions:
Bloomberg and Vanity Fair's After-Party
Capitol File may have hosted the weekend's biggest party, but the most exclusive honors went to Bloomberg LP and Vanity Fair, who hosted an impossible-to-get-into shindig for 250 on Saturday night. Taking over French ambassador Pierre Vimont's turn-of-the-century home in Kalorama, the party drew big names from politics and Hollywood, among them Demi Moore, Ashton Kutcher, Glenn Close, Eva Longoria, David Axelrod, Desiree Rogers, and the ubiquitous Captains Chesley Sullenberger and Richard Phillips. The party took over the mansion's interior rooms with bars and buffets, and spilled out into the backyard, where the many trees were uplit in blue, pink, and green.
David Bradley's Private Dinner
On Friday night, Atlantic Media owner David Bradley and his wife, Katherine Brittain Bradley, hosted an indoor cocktail reception followed by an outdoor seated dinner at their Embassy Row home. Sponsored by Toyota and Robert Mondavi Winery, the annual event was twice as large as last year, thus requiring for the first time a 40- by 40-foot HDO Productions tent, which Frost Lighting technicians draped with white rope lights.

"There's music on, but if not for that, you could hear that HVAC hum," said a representative for Jeep at the Chicago Auto Show's First Look for Charity gala. The event, held at McCormick Place on Thursday night, benefited 18 local charities and gave some 9,000 guests a sneak peek at the show on the night before it opened to the public.
The Jeep rep, who was taking guests for a spin around an off-road course, was explaining to one concerned attendee why the indoor driving would not be detrimental to gala-goers' lungs—in addition to the venue's powerful HVAC, the rep said, the carbon dioxide situation was kept under control by the Chicago Fire Department, who sent firefighters to McCormick Place to patrol the show floor.

Fashion Focus Chicago, a series of events showcasing the city's fashion talent, kicks off with a fashion show and installation at O'Hare on Friday.
In a partnership between the Chicago Department of Aviation and the Chicago Office of Tourism, "Chicago Fashion in the Airport" will feature several fashion shows that move to different terminals throughout the day while promoting the work of local designers. The on-site fashion exhibition will feature clothing displays and house a "fashion concierge," an information desk where visitors can inquire about Chicago’s shopping scene through October 10.

Chicago Gateway Green, a nonprofit organization that aims to beautify the city with the planting of trees and flowers, held its 17th annual Green Tie Ball Saturday night. The event, which we ranked as the No. 1 benefit in our list of Chicago's Top 100 Events, has historically been held outdoors. Since last year's gala attendees endured temperatures in the 40s at Northerly Island, for 2008, planners chose Chicago Scenic Studio's 100,000-square-foot warehouse space to host the almost 3,000 guests the ball attracts. It turned out to be a rainy evening with temps in the 70s, so huge industrial fans throughout the space combatted the humidity.
"This is the first time Chicago Scenic Studios has hosted a party in its warehouse space," said event organizer Denise McGowan of McGowan Durpetti & Associates, referring to the set-design company's facility. "They were throwing an anniversary party for the company the night before, so they had to shut down production for the weekend anyway."
