Revamped Spybar Looks to Human Eye for Design Inspiration
After five months and $1.3 million in renovations, Chicago's long-standing nightclub Spybar unveiled its new space in June. Open since 1996, Spybar's owners brought in new partners and a management team to refresh the look and rework the club's concept. Design firm Simeone Deary used the human eye as inspiration, contrasting warm tones of amber and bronze with dramatic pops of black.

The entirely rehabbed subterranean space preserves the character of the industrial River North building, including its original brick walls, exposed rafters, and oak floors. Modern touches, such as an illuminated mural of a woman's bedroom eyes, glass-topped tables, honeycomb-esque chandeliers, and plush leather banquettes update the 4,200-square-foot club.

Spybar added an extensive champagne list featuring rare vintages, and the club partnered with Chicago-based Vosges Haut-Chocolat to pair exotic truffles. Mixologist John Kinder, recently named a "rising star bar chef" by StarChefs.com, creates signature cocktails with seasonal ingredients behind the bar. Also as part of the renovation, Spybar's owners installed a Dynacord Alpha-Concept sound system, the only one of its kind in the Midwest. The club regularly hosts DJs from across the country.

Full buyouts for 300 are available, and the space also offers private areas for smaller groups. The state-of-the-art sound system and flat-screen TVs can be used for presentations or entertainment purposes. Other amenities include in-house catering options, a car service, dinner reservations, and hotel accommodations for guests.
