Breaking: MTV Video Music Awards Returning to Los Angeles?
It looks like MTV may take the 25th incarnation of the Video Music Awards to the West Coast at the end of the summer. Kimberly Walker, director of sales at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, said today that the venue is booked for the show on Sunday, September 7; in a follow-up phone call, she referred questions to MTV.

Stephen Kipp, vice president of special events at MTV Networks, is traveling today, but an MTV staffer in his office said this afternoon that the network had yet to set an official date or location.

A move to the Shrine would mark the VMAs’ first stop in Los Angeles in a decade, having bounced between New York (the ceremony's first and most frequent host), Miami, and Las Vegas since renting out L.A.’s Gibson Amphitheatre at Universal CityWalk in 1998. The MTV Movie Awards took place at the Gibson Amphitheatre on Sunday night; the Shrine has hosted that event, as well.

The move to Los Angeles has been rumored since March, when one writer for LA Metblogs noticed a proposal for the Kodak Theatre to host the show in a neighborhood council email. A source at the Kodak told us this morning that the venue had no plans to play host.

The Shrine Auditorium seats 6,000 guests, making it a considerably larger venue than last year's host, the Pearl at the Palms in Las Vegas, which holds as many as 2,500.    —Michael O'Connell
