Ducasse Toasts Times' Four Stars

We hear Alain Ducasse hosted a late-night celebration on the night that his restaurant, Alain Ducasse at the Essex House, got a fantastic four-star review from feisty New York Times restaurant critic William Grimes. Revelers included chefs and restaurant biz folks Mario Batali, David Bouley, Daniel Boulud, Rocco DiSpirito, Todd English, Sirio Maccioni, Drew Nieporent, Alain Sailhac, Jean-Georges Vongerichten and Tim and Nina Zagat. Coincidentally, Ducasse--who suffered through mixed reviews when his high-priced restaurant first opened--also hosted a book party a day after after Grimes gave him a three-star review in November 2000. (You can credit at least part of Ducasse's PR turnaround to the folks at the Susan Magrino Agency, who were brought in after the restaurant launched.)
