With Vanity Fair canceling its Oscar party, at least one more annual Academy Awards fete (albeit a nominally social affair) has now been axed on account of the writers strike. Fashion bigwig Diane von Furstenberg and her husband, Barry Diller, have canceled their pre-Oscar luncheon, according to The Daily.
“In years past, the Diller/von Furstenberg soirée at their Coldwater Canyon estate, which, ironically, started out as an intimate lawnside barbecue lunch 13 years ago, had grown into a mini 'V.F. Oscar party,'” The Daily reports. Vanity Fair itself called it “the coveted invitation” in its March issue, which shipped before VF canceled its party, and said of the DVF bash, “Somehow the whole affair seems very personal, and for a brief, shining moment you actually believe you're surrounded by good friends.”
Alas, those guests may have to find themselves surrounded by good friends at Elton John's AIDS fund-raiser instead; it just assumed the top spot on the Oscar-night calendar.
