At last, a bigger Javits. Long-awaited and much-delayed, the expansion of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center has finally begun, and on Friday morning the organizers of the New York International Auto Show announced that the first phase is expected to be completed by June 2010. Originally envisioned during former governor George Pataki's administration and subject to numerous budget cuts, the scaled-back $463 million project received final approval from New York's Public Authority Control Board in July.

The two components of the development involve the construction of a 100,000-square-foot facility on the Midtown West block bounded by 39th Street, 11th Avenue, 40th Street, and 12th Avenue—which will be connected to the existing center by a 15-foot-wide passageway—and the repair of the current site's leaky roof. The addition on the north side of the campus, tentatively named Javits Center North, will increase exhibition space by 40,000 square feet, with the other 60,000 devoted to prefunction, registration, and food service areas, as well as a truck court and loading docks. Once this area is available for use, renovations will start next June and finish by 2013. MORE >>

Lincoln Center's redevelopment project, a $1.2 billion undertaking that started in 2006, (and received $100 million from billionaire David H. Koch last year) just got another financial boost. Yesterday, Lincoln Center revealed that David M. Rubenstein, managing director of private equity firm the Carlyle Group, has pledged $10 million. In honor of the gift, the new visitors center for the campus—scheduled to open on November 24—will be named the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center.

Designed by Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects, the atrium is a key part of Lincoln Center's renovation and is conceptualized as the gateway to the Upper West Side hub. In addition to offering a central spot to purchase tickets, the community space will also house a café and serve as the site for free weekly performances and the departure area for the center's tour program. • On Friday afternoon, Tavern on the Green's labor union is expected to protest future operator Dean Poll's proposal to reduce wages, change benefits, and adjust scheduling provisions at restaurant. [Crain's]

Bowlmor Lanes to Reopen Pressure as Carnival

Carnival

Another new venue to add to the fall lineup is Carnival, a bar and lounge area that will open atop Bowlmor Lanes in early October. Replacing pool hall Pressure, this 16,000-square-foot space will be completely revamped and, when finished, offer a circus- and carnival-style environment. Above Bowlmor and, like its predecessor, housed within a 60-foot air pressurized bubble, Carnival will include the kind of activities more commonly found on the midway, including a dunk tank and a high striker (the strength-testing game that involves a mallet and a tower with a bell on top).

To complement the distractions, the venue will also offer live entertainment from circus performers and casual fare like pizza, burgers, and mini corn dogs. Drinks will match the theme too, with selections that include caramel apple martinis, beer, and a two-gallon mix of Absolut Vodka, Malibu Rum, Beefeater Gin, and fruit juice dubbed the "Dunk Tank."

For events, Carnival will hold 500 guests.   —Anna Sekula

Renaissance Relaunches New York, Paris Hotels With Younger Crowd, Indie Musicians

Renaissance New York Hotel 57's relaunch party

It would seem that to launch its new contemporary image, Renaissance Hotels & Resorts has borrowed a page out of the W Hotel playbook: Starwood's boutique brand has a history of performance-focused launches and promotions, including the opening of the W Hoboken with Jamie Foxx and the Depeche Mode concert to publicize the W Hollywood earlier this year. In a similar vein, Thursday night saw a 600-person crowd of young and fashion-minded New Yorkers—including Gossip Girl stars Penn Badgley and Chace Crawford—hit the Renaissance New York Hotel 57 for a rowdy party that involved a live performance by British singer Mr. Hudson. (The Marriott-owned hotel even tapped the producer behind the W Hoboken's opening, Tony Berger of Relevent.) Six hours earlier, the Renaissance Paris Arc de Triomphe property held a similar event with indie rocker Santigold.

The two events were designed to call attention to a big change in strategy from Renaissance Hotels. The hotel group recently invested $2 million to renovate its 140 properties—the Renaissance New York Hotel 57 received a $40 million overhaul—through which it hopes to target younger, hipper travelers with modern interiors and amenities as well as partnerships with brands like Jack Spade and Absolut Vodka.   —Anna Sekula
