In a city that leads the world in fashion, finance, media, and advertising—to name a few areas—it takes something special to stand out. Our annual list highlights the parties, trade shows, benefits, and parades that draw media buzz, tourism dollars, and top players in their field. This year, upstarts like the New York City Wine & Food Festival have staked a claim to the list, and growing entities like the CMJ Music Marathon have climbed a few notches. Although the wobbly economy is likely to have serious implications for every host included here, you can bet these festivities will continue to draw attention in 2009. MORE >>

1. New York International Auto Show
America’s ailing car industry hopes for a pick-me-up at this April 10 to 19 event, which fills the Javits Center with more than 1,000 new vehicles. Although slumping auto sales made the 2008 show a little less festive than usual, the event still drew more than one million attendees.

2. New York National Boat Show
Traditionally held in early January, the world’s longest-running boat show moved to the pre-holiday season for the first time in 2008. More than 80,000 marine maniacs took over the Javits Center from December 13 to 21, and similar numbers are expected (for the 105th year) in December 2009.

3. New York International Gift Fair
This twice-annual event drew 36,000 attendees and 2,900 exhibitors to the August 2008 edition and expected similar numbers at the January 25 to 29 outing, which took over the Javits Center and Piers 90, 92, and 94.

4. New York Comic Con
Enthusiastic pop-culture fans are drawn to this celebration of comic books, video games, anime, movies, and more. Since debuting in 2006, Comic Con has steadily increased attendance each year, attracting 64,000 in 2008. The fest returned to the Javits Center February 6 to 8. MORE >>

1. The Armory Show
This contemporary art show began 10 years ago at the 69th Regiment Armory, but outgrew that venue and will take place March 5 to 8 this year at Pier 94 and Pier 92. With 160 exhibitors from 21 countries, the 2008 show attracted more than 50,000 visitors.

2. International Contemporary Furniture Fair
More than 25,000 people attended this international furniture showcase in 2008. The fair, which spreads across 145,000 square feet of exhibit space at the Javits Center, will return May 16 to 19.

3. Cooper-Hewitt National Design Awards
This gala honoring the best in American design is the anchor event of Cooper-Hewitt’s National Design Week. Padma Lakshmi presented the People’s Design Award to Stuart Karten (for the Zn hearing aid) at the 2008 awards. The event returns to the museum’s Arthur Ross Terrace and Garden on October 22. 1. Upfront Week
Every May, TV networks woo advertisers with over-the-top pitches for their new fall seasons. Due to the writers’ strike (and some skepticism about the week’s effectiveness), some nets pared down the presentations in 2008, but there were still plenty of big parties, like the CW’s Maroon 5 concert at Lincoln Center and the 2,000-person Fox bash at Wollman Rink. This year is likely to bring more hand-wringing, but the upfronts aren’t going to disappear just yet. MORE >>

This industry mega-event has Manhattan buzzing twice each year, with models at Bryant Park showing off the latest from the city’s top designers (and a few celebrities). Meanwhile, pre- and post-parties light up the town. Fashion Week returned on February 13, and in the fall will run from September 10 to 17, when it will start on Thursday instead of Friday. MORE >>
