Fall Preview: What Las Vegas Event Pros Are Working on This Season
With the unofficial end of summer now behind us (that would be Labor Day), event professionals are looking to the fall—a traditionally busy time—to see how the economic recovery will help the industry rebound from what has so far been a pretty slow year. We asked a group of local planners and vendors what they have in the works for the coming months. Here are some highlights.

"Baskow is very excited about the fall season. We have written 68 proposals in the past three weeks for September, October, November, and January events. We see the economy coming back strong. I recently booked two name celebrities for October events in Miami and four well-known speakers. People are also spending money again, starting to book Vegas venues and talent. This is the most exciting news for our economy."
—Jaki Baskow, owner and C.E.O., Baskow & Associates

"People are calling me for private catering and booking events from Las Vegas to California. At Southern Wine and Spirits Las Vegas, sales were higher than expected for the Labor Day weekend. [We] anticipate that with the projected December 4 opening of the Mandarin Oriental, the first CityCenter tower to open, things will be on the rise. People from all over are eager to see what this project looks like. New restaurants and attractions are what drive people here. With all the excitement and buzz around this project, our local economy should take a step forward. People want to travel and get away—now is a great opportunity to do this. Room rates, packages, and shows are discounted to draw [convention, meeting, and event business, plus tourism] here."
—Nick Lorenz, founder, Lorenz Catering, and executive chef, Southern Wine and Spirits

"The Light Group is proud to be involved as an official sponsor of the BlogWorld Expo, the world’s largest blogging trade show and conference, hosting BlogWorld industry events at Jet Nightclub at the Mirage and the Bank Nightclub at Bellagio. Additionally, this December we open the doors to five venues at Aria Resort & Casino, located in the heart of CityCenter. As part of this unprecedented project, the Light Group is unveiling a state-of-the-art nightclub, two ultra lounges, an adult pool, and a restaurant concept to our existing portfolio of 11 venues."
—Maggie Tuitele Garcia, director of sales and special events, the Light Group

"I look forward to [the coming months] as a rebirth for a city that consistently reinvents itself and raises the bar with regard to the meetings and events business. With the long-awaited arrival of MGM Mirage’s $11 billion project, CityCenter, the largest privately funded development in North American history, Las Vegas is again poised to lead the industry in redefining the corporate and incentive travel industry. Las Vegas, home to three of the top 10 convention centers in the country, is arguably the No. 1 convention destination in the world. The city possesses assets by way of room product, meeting space, and on-site amenities, which place it among the top tier of value destinations for corporate and incentive programs. And the December opening of CityCenter will yet again raise the bar of this destination, keeping it at the forefront of the convention, meeting, and event industry."
—Lenny Talarico, director of events, MGM Mirage Events

"The convention season is upon us and heating up—back to school in Las Vegas also means back to big business in Las Vegas. September through November promises mild weather and a busy convention calendar. Holiday menus are planned for our bustling December company parties while we work on our New Year’s Eve agenda ... and the Trump International Hotel Las Vegas is welcoming the fall season with a red carpet black-tie event: Nevada’s first lady, Dawn Gibbons, has orchestrated an evening to benefit the Autism Coalition of Nevada by honoring the centennial anniversary of the governor’s mansion."
—Vicki Savini, director of sales,
Trump International Hotel Las Vegas
