Nancy Davis welcomed guests to the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza on Friday for the 19th annual Race to Erase MS gala, which this year got a playful, splashy look and feel thanks to its “Glam Rock to Erase MS" theme. All told, the buzzy, big-money fund-raiser took in $1.8 million to benefit the Nancy Davis Foundation for Multiple Sclerosis and its Center Without Walls program. The hands-on Davis and foundation C.O.O. Liz Seares spearheaded the event.

The bash opened with a celebrity fashion show that included styles from the Andy Hilfiger Andrew Charles Rock ’N’ Roll Collection, in addition to a presentation of the debut collection Authentic Icon, inspired by American Idol. Models included the likes of Shannon Elizabeth, Taylor Hicks, and Kendall and Kylie Jenner.

The evening also included a live auction called by Shaun Robinson and Jason Kennedy, during which bidders walked away with items like a fashion week package from the Mandarin Oriental in New York, and a five-night stay for a winner plus seven at the Vomo Private Island Resort in Fiji, a shopping spree with the Hilton sisters, and others.

Race to Erase MS once again hosted a variety of musical performances throughout the evening. Indie pop band Fitz and the Tantrums opened the show, followed by a set from American Idol winner David Cook. Vocal quartet the Tenors did a two-song set that included a cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah," and last, Stevie Wonder sang a six-song set, including “Come Let Me Make Your Love Come Down,” “Higher Ground,” “Easy on Yourself,” “Isn’t She Lovely,” and “Superstition.”

In Race to Erase MS tradition, a rendition of “Lean On Me,” served as the finale of the evening, this year led by Wonder, who was joined by Davis, LaToya Jackson, Noelle Scaggs from Fitz and the Tantrums, Clay Walker, Cook, the Tenors, and an array of past Idol contestants.

On their way out, guests—including a big celebrity contingent like Khloe Kardashian-Odom and Lamar Odom, Jon Lovitz, and Jack Osbourne—scooped up the event's gift bag, with items like makeup from Laura Geller, certificates to the Bar Method of Los Angeles, nail polish from Essie, watches from Rumba Time, and gift certificates to Massage L.A.

EMD Serono, Hyatt Regency Century Plaza, Associated Television International, and American Airlines sponsored the night.

There was gold, gold everywhere at the California Science Center on Friday night for its annual "Discovery Ball." The event this year drew inspiration for its theme from Cleopatra, the subject of "Cleopatra: the Exhibition," which will open at the museum on May 23. The California Science Center Foundation's event services department, led by vice president of food and event services Christina Sion, produced the event.

The program kicked off with cocktails in an area meant to evoke a central marketplace in ancient Alexandria, which would have been the hub of world commerce on the Nile during Cleopatra's time. Various vendor stalls displayed wares like spices, wine, and beer. On the third floor, guests queued up to check out the new exhibit.

For dinner, the group moved to another view of ancient Egypt, with a meal meant to evoke a feast hosted by Mark Antony and Queen Cleopatra. Contrasted against the cocktail setup meant to evoke a commoners' setting, the dinner setup was meant to reflect the former queen's enormous wealth. "We were joking that if anyone stood still long enough while working on this event setup, they would surely be painted gold," Sion said. "Everything was gilded and bejeweled."

Following dinner, a pop-up nightclub dubbed "Midnight at the Oasis" got a black and shiny gold color palette, with guests entering through a custom-designed golden pyramid by Rrivre Works and crossing over a faux Nile river from S.E.C. "We thoroughly enjoyed working with Universal Studios on selecting the perfect props for this event," Sion said. "The scale of decor required to convey the grandeur and pageantry of this time period was easily found in their collection. We also found some wonderful items at Omega and History for Hire. While doing research for this gala, we invited all of our staff and vendors who work on this event annually to watch the classic movie Cleopatra starring Elizabeth Taylor on our large IMAX screen and it was so inspirational."

A live camel named Maggie held court near the Tesla car raffle area, intended as an ironic display of two modes of transportation. The winner of the car raffle was Michael Rouse from Toyota. It was an apt twist: He was one of the first board members to purchase a raffle ticket back in January because he hadn't been able to participate in previous years—since he'd donated the raffle cars on behalf of his organization for approximately the last decade prior to Tesla stepping in to donate the prize this year.

Also among the evening's speakers was Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who lauded the Science Center and apologized for being underdressed, explaining he'd just come from a press conference in which he announced the killers of two students from the adjacent U.S.C. campus had been captured, a moment of applause and relief from the community in attendance.

Beverages came from Turkish Coffee World and Somerston Wine Company.

The watch purveyor Swatch intended to bring its brand to life on Friday with an event at art space Royal/T, also known for now as the home of Swatch's new pop-up shop. Hosted with the TTR World Snowboard Tour, the event celebrated the unveiling of this year’s Swatch Art Rules Design contest winner, Marta Zarina-Gelze from Latvia, chosen from more than 3,000 participants in 90 countries, with more than 1,300 design proposals submitted.

Following the ceremony, L.A.-based DJ and radio/TV host DJ Skee spun for the crowd and shared the stage with a surprise musical performer: Warren G.

Guests checked out the latest Swatch collections at the pop-up shop that will be open through the end of May, while scooping up passed hors d’oeuvres and drinks.

The look and feel of the event—and of the MannoMedia-produced pop-up shop over all—was meant to embrace what Swatch calls the pillars of its brand: art, sports, and fashion.

The Hollywood Palladium was the backdrop for Thursday night's Heart Foundation gala honoring Dr. P.K. Shah and Kimberly Shah. The event drew a major celebrity lineup, with Dana Carvey opening, Michael Buble headlining a 60-minute set with a 12-piece orchestra, musical director David Foster, a guest appearance by Paul Anka, and Ryan Seacrest serving as M.C. Director of operations and donor relations Catherine Erlinger oversaw the event, tapping Dave Merrell and AOO Live, a new division of AOO Events, to produce.

AOO built the look for the event around a tangerine and cherry red color palette. Guest tables on the club floor were either rounds or king tables intermixed to allow for maximum seating. Shimmer tangerine or red linens draped tables, which were topped with modular centerpieces in both low-lying and taller abstract cylinders filled with orange and fuchsia amaryllis and hydrangea in complementing colors. Bronze crocodile Chameleon chairs and antique bronze-gold chargers rounded out the look. Floor-to-ceiling panels of bubbled and ice velvet white-on-white burnout sheer fabric framed the giant regency lamps, lending an intimate feel.

Dramatic lighting drenched the room in several different rich color palettes throughout the evening. White burnout fabric flats backed by floor-to-ceiling crystal curtains surrounding a 21- by 12-foot screen for multimedia presentations and IMAG decorated the stage. A floating logo backed an acrylic podium for speakers and the award presentation.

The foundation honored the Shahs with the Steven S. Cohen Humanitarian award, with Foster presenting it to the couple after surprising them with an impromptu performance from him and his friends, Anka and Buble.

Generosity Water's fourth annual "Night of Generosity" gala took to the Hollywood Roosevelt on May 4, offering guests a bit of education with their dinner and entertainment. After walking a blue carpet and entering the historic lobby lounge, guests experienced the so-called "water walk," created by producer Kapture Vision along with the support of Kristen Tarsiuk and Alistair Chang. The walk took attendees through a deconstructed wooden corridor where they wore headphones and learned about the water crisis around the world. Four informational display panels also fit the rustic village motif, and guests had the option to donate to the cause in multiple areas of the party throughout the night.

“Our goal was to create a space that not only entertained the guests, but also inspired generosity from each one of them,” said Kapture's Nilo G. "Whether it was a donation station or the live water well auction, we succeeded in giving each person an opportunity to give to the cause in a way that was meaningful to them."

Including a $100,000 live auction, Generosity Water raised more than $150,000 toward building clean water wells in Ghana, Haiti, and Ethiopia.

Orange County Super Fair's Steven Beazley on Adding a Week and a $2.5 Million Exhibit to the Event

Steven Beazley, president and C.E.O. of the O.C. Fair & Event Center, began his 33-year career with the fair organization at 12 years old, as a sweeper at the end of the daily parade. In the decade since he's worked for the organization full time, he's overseen the O.C. Super Fair's ascent from 34th to 13th largest fair in North America, with an expected 2009 attendance of 1.1 million. This year's fair runs from July 10 through August 9—a week longer than in the past year. It will also include a new big-scale exhibit and 3-D movie called Al's Brain in conjunction with Weird Al Yankovic.

Why add a week to the fair?
We always look at our attendance numbers. The philosophy we work under is that everybody wants to be where everybody else is unless everybody’s there. The only way to take some pressure off crowds and decrease lines was to add some dates. It’s very difficult for a general-admission event to be called sold out. But the quality of experience goes down beyond a certain point. When a line gets 15 people long, you know something’s got to be done about that.

That sounds like a good problem to have.
It’s a problem based on our successes. We’re very happy to be grappling with things like that. The county is still growing by about 1.5 percent a year. We need to be mindful to accommodate that growth by giving people good experiences at the fair and keep them coming back. We're always focusing on growing at the same rate as the county.

The key to [our significant growth] is listening to the community and really meeting the needs of what their interests are. What do they want to see? When you’re really listening is when you start attracting the most people.

Brent Bolthouse on Big Budgets, Smaller Parties, and Keeping Young Hollywood Entertained

Brent Bolthouse has been an established name on the Los Angeles nightlife scene for years, with his own production company and its roster of corporate clients including Dior, Target, Maxim, Prada, and HBO. After a series of partnerships brokered in the past year, he now runs events as the head of full-service production company Bolthouse Vox Events, the product of relationships with some of the leading names in the L.A. event industry. Bolthouse merged his firm with Vox Entertainment and SBE, and the new company has an exclusive catering contract with Wolfgang Puck. Bolthouse took some time to speak with us about the strategies behind the alliances.

Bolthouse will also speak at the BizBash Expo June 11 at the L.A. Mart in Los Angeles. Information about the show is here.

Why did you decide to join forces with Vox Entertainment, SBE, and Wolfgang Puck?
Last year we started exploring possibilities to expand our event business and talked with Vox. They were always a nuts-and-bolts production house, and we were always on the entertainment side. We had a core warehouse of furniture, and they had [elements like] lights and barricades. Just looking at the economic climate, we decided it’s smart for us to pool our resources and create a joint venture to really strengthen our position in the marketplace. Our companies complemented each other.

Wolfgang Puck is the best caterer in the country. This year, in the spring, we all thought how great it would be to have a partnership with them as well. We wanted to take all of our resources and give that value to our customers.

With the marathon under new ownership—LA Marathon LLC, formerly known as Going the Distance, now operates the race—it's Abraham's first go at overseeing the program.

This year's race will be run on Memorial Day, May 25, rather than President's Day, February 16. What was behind the date change?
We came in with new ownership, and we’ve really looked at every single aspect of the marathon. We’ve changed the course from last year: We went back to the loop route that starts in downtown, which was last run in 2006. It’s a very fast route, very popular with runners.

Jennifer Üner Overseeing Calendar for More-Diffuse-Than-Ever L.A. Fashion Week

Fashion Week in Los Angeles has never been quite the cohesive entity it is in other international cities. For five years, a partnership between IMG and Smashbox Studios created a more organized program centered in Culver City, but the widely publicized dissolution of that agreement after last season left something of a void.

Independent marketing consultant Jennifer Üner has spent the last seven years overseeing the biannual calendar at FashionWeekLA.com, the most comprehensive and longest-running local calendar of the somewhat ragtag collection of events that has historically made up the week. For this season's Fashion Week—which begins Friday—Üner's calendar is taking on an even greater significance as the industry's unofficial scheduling clearinghouse in the vacuum left after the formal partnership ended. (Üner also manages events and created the Los Angeles Fashion Awards.) We talked to her about how this season's schedule has come together.

Tell us about Fashion Week Los Angeles’s first season since the Smashbox partnership ended.
With the crash of the economy, it was a timely departure for IMG, producers of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios. Their departure, plus the economy, has created a season of uncertainty. As a result, we are seeing fewer of the more established brands showing on the runway. On the flip side, this leaves room for newcomers to grab some attention. We are seeing a rise in the number of new independent producers who wish to fill the void left by IMG. Usually it is individual designers producing shows in a variety of off-site venues. This year, we see producers determined to pioneer new venues and attract the designers to show with them.

Coachella Party Preview: Armani Exchange, Lacoste, Guess, 'Details,' and More Brands

Coachella festival producer Goldenvoice last year announced its decision to expand this year's festival from one weekend to two. The annual concert will now take to Empire Polo Club in Indio from April 13-15 and April 20-22. So what does that mean for the brands on board to market their wares? Most returnees and newbies alike plan to stick with a one-time presence during the festival's first weekend.

Among them is Armani Exchange, which is hosting its third annual "Armani Exchange and T-Mobile Neon Carnival" late on Saturday night at a remote airport hangar not far from the festival grounds. The night will celebrate the launch of Armani Exchange's new Color Pop watch collection and T-Mobile's HTC One S device, and will include its signature carnival accoutrements, like a Ferris wheel, giant slide, bumper cars, snow cones, and cotton candy. Bolthouse produces, and Shadow and PMK-BNC handle PR for the event, one of the weekend's most coveted.

The roster of fashion brands that piggyback on the show seems to grow each year; look for a presence from the likes of H&M, Mulberry, and Madewell. Also coming back the first weekend of the festival is Lacoste. The brand's younger line, Lacoste Live, will host its pool party, presented by HTC, and bring back its signature green crocodile pool rafts. Food will come from L.A.'s Slice Truck and Don Chow Tacos trucks, and frozen treats will come from sponsors Fiji, which will provide snow cones, and Patrón, which will provide spiked Popsicles. At the party, produced by Made With Elastic, Look for activities like giant Twister, speedboat racing, and a phone-charging station, plus a pop-up shop offering discount shopping to benefit the Voice Project. And Guess will host its Guess? Hotel in La Quinta, with daytime parties during the first weekend.

Magazines are also a popular category as party hosts, with Details partnering with Hennessy V.S. to bring its "Details @ Midnight" franchise to Coachella. The latest installment will include a performance by Asher Roth. The event provides a platform for Hennessy to generate further awareness for the brand’s new communications campaign, “Wild Rabbit.” Another magazine on board will be Nylon, for which People's Revolution is working on a brunch and barbecue party with Hugo Boss at the "Hugo Boss Escape House" at a private home in La Quinta on Saturday. Performers will include Rye Rye, Sucré, the Misshapes, DJ Adam12, Mia Moretti and Caitlin Moe, DJ Oliver, and Mel Debarge. Filter magazine will celebrate 10 years in print—which conveniently coincides with the 10th anniversary of its Coachella kickoff events—with Thursday events before both weekends. For the first time, Planet Blue will also host a Coachella event, with Foam magazine and 90210 actress Gillian Zinser at the Alcazar Hotelin Palm Springs on the first weekend. Drinks will come from Pabst Blue Ribbon and Peligroso tequila, DJ Zinzi Edmunson will spin, and Snap Yourself will provide the photo booth.

Night Vision Entertainment, the Alliance, and Chevy Volt will present a lineup of two pool parties on Saturday and Sunday during the first weekend. The event, known as "The Mirage," will be centered around a massive 4,000-square-foot pool in Rancho Mirage. Belvedere will be back with its Belve Music Lounge on Friday and Saturday during the first weekend. The Ace Hotel will host its annual Desert Gold parties with diverse and global music, and Flaunt and KCRW will be among the brands present at a weekend-long party at the new Saguaro. At its restaurant, Tinto, Lexus will host a private dinner Friday night.

The 84th annual Academy Awards on Sunday will bring on their heels a whirlwind of related parties, suites, and other events, big and small. But on the big night this year, don't expect a major shake up to the importance of the top three major events—the Governors Ball hosted by the academy, Vanity Fair's viewing bash, and the Elton John AIDS Foundation fund-raiser—which will be back on the scene commanding their typical A-list guest attendance and frenzy of media attention (albeit with some format and venue changes). Afterward, however, newcomer Maxim will attempt to claim ownership of the late-night spot.

The Elton John AIDS Foundation viewing bash will take to a new venue this year: the redesigned West Hollywood Park. The guest count will balloon to 890 from last year's 750, with the dinner catered for the eighth year by Crumble Catering. Given that the city of West Hollywood hasn't even opened the park yet, it stopped construction in order to keep the prestigious party within the city limits after its move from the Pacific Design Center. Chopard, Neuro, and Wells Fargo will sponsor, and Foster the People will perform.
For Oscar Party Vendors, a Paycheck Is Just One of the Payoffs

It's hardly a stretch to say that Oscar parties in Los Angeles are among the world's most high-profile, glittering bashes. But that doesn't necessarily mean they're among the most expensive parties. Asked about the cost of Vanity Fair's annual, A-list soiree, editor Graydon Carter told Bloomberg, “Not as much as it looks.” That's in part because vendors may be willing to get on board at a discount for hosts who know they're dealing with hot commodities.

For vendors, working on the season's biggest events can mean calculated cost cutting in the interest of a variety of other benefits. The companies that work on the lavish affairs say they do take home a profit, but the array of other bonuses is what makes the projects worthwhile. Beyond revenue, vendors describe a faceted combination of motivations including marketing value, relationship building with clients and other vendors, name recognition, and—of course—the reflected glory of the Academy Awards themselves.

Oscar Preview: Despite Their Budgets, Parties Will Feel as Rich as Ever

This Oscar season in Los Angeles, you can expect a party landscape as opulent as ever. But while showiness is back in fashion, it doesn't necessarily come with a corresponding bump in budget.

The Elton John AIDS Foundation viewing fund-raiser, consistently one of the biggest events on Oscar night, will move this year to a larger venue that will accommodate 890 dinner guests instead of last year’s 740—and will have a chance to draw from that many more wallets for the cause. Apart from, say, the additional rental costs incurred for a larger guest count, the budget for the event will not increase.

“There's definitely a difference in [the right] direction over the last several years in terms of the economy, [but] because we're so strictly audited internally, our budget doesn't change every year,” said Virginia Fout of V Productions, the producer of the event now in its 20th year. “Things are coming back and people are feeling more comfortable supporting [projects like these], and spending money. Perception was a big issue, and now [it’s OK to look rich again] with caution."
