Ricky Gervais to Host the Golden Globes, the Telecast's First Since 1995
|
Golden Globe and Emmy winner Ricky Gervais will host the 67th annual Golden Globe awards, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, Dick Clark Productions, and NBC announced on Monday. The show will be broadcast live on NBC from the Beverly Hilton Hotel on January 17, 2010.
The choice marks the first time the telecast has had a host since 1995. “Not only is this the biggest Hollywood celebration of the industry which includes both film and TV, but also an environment where I feel I can get free rein as a host. I have resisted many other offers like this, but there are just some things you don't turn down,” Gervais said in the announcement.

Bill Mechanic and Adam Shankman to Produce Oscars Telecast
|
Bill Mechanic and Adam Shankman will produce the 82nd Academy Awards telecast, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president Tom Sherak announced today. This will be the first significant Oscar show involvement for both.
Mechanic is the chairman and C.E.O. of Pandemonium Films and the former chairman and C.E.O. of Fox Filmed Entertainment. His producer credits include this year's Coraline. Shankman’s directorial credits include Hairspray and The Wedding Planner.
In an announcement, Sherak said that Shankman's experience in producing, directing, and especially choreography would prove assets to the production—suggesting dance could play a significant role in the program. He also said that Mechanic's experience as a producer, studio exec, and film historian would come into play.

Heidi Klum Had Private Delivery Room—Just in Case—at Emmy Governors Ball
|
Many high-profile events take precautions to address health and safety concerns. But an "only in Hollywood" designation might be in order for the measures undertaken by the organizers of the Emmys Governors Ball on Sunday. On Call Medic, the medic team in place at the event, set up a private birthing room just in case it would have been necessary to serve attendee Heidi Klum, who is due to deliver her fourth baby within the next two weeks. Working with Klum's private security team, On Call Medic owner Sylvia Wildfire set up the private room for the patient's comfort and for any other needs. Special permission was also granted for Klum’s private limo to be parked at the entrance to the event for the entire time she was inside. "Although the room was not needed, it did serve peace of mind," Wildfire said. —Alesandra Dubin

Fashion Designer Paul Poiret Inspires Glitzy HBO Emmy Party

After a bit of belt-tightening throughout the year, HBO’s 61st annual Primetime Emmy Awards post-awards reception last night was as lavish as ever. This year, the team of designer Billy Butchkavitz and HBO vice president of special events Eileen Rivard took their cue from a master—early 20th-century French fashion designer Paul Poiret, who was known for his decadent soirees.
Never one to repeat himself, Butchkavitz selected a Poiret fashion illustration set in a garden as his inspiration for dressing the vast plaza outside the Pacific Design Center in a striking palette of black, red, and taupe. Floral brocades from Turkey, Thailand, and Taiwan covered seating, tables, and walls, and custom carpeting mimicked the black-and-white floral pattern on the walls. Large red-framed mirrors, red glass plates and goblets, and black glass martini glasses, urns, and ashtrays served as accents and accessories.

Entertainment Tonight Emmy Party Amps Up Exclusivity With Shrunken Guest List, Venue Change

For Hollywood types, a good strategy is to gather no moss. And in the spirit of continual reinvention, Entertainment Tonight took its annual Emmy party sponsored by People to Vibiana—after hosting it for the last two years at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Like Disney Hall, Vibiana, an opulent former 19th century cathedral, is downtown, only minutes from the Nokia Theatre, where the Emmy ceremony took place. ET and The Insider executive producer Linda Bell Blue oversaw the party, with planning from the shows' communications vice president, Lisa Summers Haas, who Bell Blue credited with fielding the hands-on challenges and details with grace. The internal team again tapped Bounce Entertainment, headed by Carleen Cappelletti, to produce.
“We've had the party in many locations, and we thought it was time to move to a new place. [Vibiana] reminded me of Europe with all the mosaics and everything,” Bell Blue said. Summers Haas, who noted that TV Guide’s aannual party was cancelled this year, added, “It takes six months to plan this party, and six months ago, people were wondering if there was even going to be a party. Walt Disney Hall just did not seem right—it's grand and huge. But Vibiana—any time you walk through that door you immediately say, 'Oh my god.' It's so beautiful, so intimate."

Emmy Governors Ball Goes for Jewel-Toned, Xanadu-Evocative Opulence

If there was an appropriate time to tone down a ballroom, at least one group of event organizers believed last night was not that time. The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences' Governors Ball at the Los Angeles Convention Center after the Emmys ceremony was a bold and colorful affair, awash in jewel tones inspired by the work of the late interior designer Tony Duquette and the concept of Xanadu. Dwight Jackson, Russ Patrick, and Joe Stewart chaired the ball along with a larger committee, and Sequoia Productions produced it for the 12th consecutive year.
"Everybody in the room has the recession monkey on their back, but once a year you have all these people—academy, nominees, winners—in one room, and it's like, enough already," said Sequoia's Cheryl Cecchetto. "They're not thinking about the recession. They're thinking about cutting the next deal. And it's our job to stimulate their senses [to inspire them]."
Nevertheless, Jackson noted that the budget shrunk about 30 percent from last year for the same guest count—about 3,500—and the group repurposed and repainted elements from last year's ball, like Deco columns. "We started this party as soon as [the previous] year's ended. We worked a whole year on the party, having meetings once a month," he said. Cecchetto reported that the party took nine days to load in, but had just 22 hours to load out. About 1,200 staffers were on hand to accomplish the feat.

Emmy Parties and Suites: TV Guide Is Off, ET Moves to Vibiana, HBO Gets Euro Style, EW Partners With Women in Film
|
With the Primetime Emmys coming up this Sunday, September 20, the calendar is bustling with related events following on the big show's heels, with only one significant dropout. Here's a roundup:
In what has been a tough year for the publication, TV Guide will not host its traditional big party this year. Event Eleven, helmed by Tony Schubert, who has produced the event in past years, will work on the Entertainment Weekly party at the Sunset Marquis on Thursday night. For the magazine's seventh annual event, Entertainment Weekly has partnered with Women in Film's new TV and media committee. Maybelline New York's new Colorsensational Lip Color will sponsor, and organizers will infuse the brand’s color palette throughout all the details of the decor. PMK/HBH is handling PR.
Among the other big pre-parties is Family Guy's event, which will take to Avalon Hollywood on Friday night to celebrate its nomination for best comedy. Night Vision Entertainment is producing the event, which is set to include a 45-foot inflatable Peter Griffin character out front. Inside, conductor Ron Jones will lead an orchestra. And instead of a standard photo booth, guests' photos will go into flipbooks (simulating a cartoon—get it?). DJ Rick Rude will spin ambient tunes upstairs in Bardot. Entertainment Fusion Group is handling PR.

TV Academy Honors Producers With Hamptons-Style Party—One of 22 Emmy Season Events

For Barbara Chase, executive producer of special projects for the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, the weeks leading up to the Primetime Emmy Awards on September 20 are as busy as tax season is for an accountant. Between August 24 and Monday evening, when the academy celebrated nominated producers, Chase and event producer Richard Lauter, president of Savore Cuisine & Events, organized 22 bashes for various branches.
Organizers redressed the usually humble courtyard outside the Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre three times, evoking affluent leisure in a Tommy Bahama-style tropical paradise; a clean, contemporary lounge space using dark woods and white upholstery; and a Hamptons-flavored beach escape with tall grasses, glass containers of lemons and shells, and Shabby Chic-style furniture.
