Elle Fetes Hollywood Women With Intimate A-List Bash Awash in White Decor
|
Every so often comes along an event with enough star wattage to nearly overcome the paparazzi waiting outside. Such was the case at Elle's Women in Hollywood awards on Monday night. A scant 220 guests came to the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills to join the program, and most of those were boldface names—including honorees Katie Holmes, Julianne Moore, Julie Andrews, and Renée Zellweger, and their presenters and industry friends. This year, a 60-foot-long carpet (versus 28 feet last year) helped keep the arrivals scene sane.
The magazine's New York-based special events manager, Caitlin Weiskopf, oversaw the event, tapping Caravents to produce it for the first time. The look was nearly all white, in honor of sponsor Calvin Klein. In the entry area, an Elle-logo plexi wall stood in front of a Four Seasons' fountain, and a gallery of 18 framed images—celebrity beauty shots and imagery that spanned a century—from sponsor L'Oreal Paris lined the walkway. Baubles from sponsor David Yurman decked a display made from materials such as silver trays and mirror detailing, rather than a standard glass case. And at the end of the arrivals carpet, a representative from sponsor Moët encouraged arriving celebrities to sign an oversize bottle of bubbly, which would be auctioned for the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. As to the sponsors' integrations, they were "a little more modern, more clean, more integrated," than is typical, said Caravents' Cara Kleinhaut.

FROM TORONTO
When Coty Canada began planning Tuesday's media launch for the new Calvin Klein fragrance Secret Obsession, the company wanted to create a sense of mystery and suspense for guests. “Since the name of the product is Secret Obsession, we wanted to invite all of the media members and really not reveal where they were going," said Aliki Mahshy, director of public relations and education for Coty Canada. So the company arranged for private cars to pick up guests and drive them to a location that remained "undisclosed," Mahshy said.
Guests were dropped at the shipping entrance to a downtown building and taken through a subterranean tunnel of sorts to enter the event space, the the bank vault in the basement of the Suites at 1 King West. (The building, now a hotel, once housed the head office of the Dominion Bank of Canada.) “This location was so indicative of Secret Obsession. When we found this it was extremely intriguing to us. There’s a lot of caged elements and the idea or concept of unlocking something. It was really very fitting for this particular brand," Mahshy said.

A scant 200 guests made the invitee list for Elle’s Women in Hollywood event Monday night at the Four Seasons. Chelsea Handler assumed hosting duties for the event, which honored Hollywood icons including Halle Berry, Jane Fonda, Catherine Hardwicke, Anne Hathaway, Salma Hayek, Nicole Kidman, Sigourney Weaver, and Isla Fisher.
Elle’s Eric Johnson oversaw the event for the magazine and worked with Larry Abel/De-signs for production. “The aesthetic we are going with this year is very clean, crisp, fresh—something that we feel is in line with Elle,” said Caitlin Weiskopf, the magazine's special events and merchandising manager, who also worked on the event.

Lollapalooza Lounge Oozes Almost Famous Vibe

FROM CHICAGO Indie rockers and 167,000 fans who love them descended upon Chicago’s sun-baked Grant Park this past weekend to catch Lollapalooza’s 130 bands and performers (Pearl Jam, Daft Punk, and Amy Winehouse among them). Returning for the second year—and running the only swag-and-tattoo concept in town—was the CK IN2U music lounge produced by the New York-based BMF Media Group. The event ran out of the Hard Rock Hotel on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, offering up an AC-blasted venue for bands and industry V.I.P.s to hang out in between the “Lolla” (that’s band-talk for the festival) shows.
“The bands only get so much time in their trailers before they’re kicked out, so we offered them an indoor retreat away from the sun and the throngs of fans,” said BMF Media talent and branding maestro (no joke, that’s his title) Bruce Starr, who was aided in production by BWR Public Relations vice president Mary Kaye Daniels and senior account executive Joanna Kelsey. “The space is almost like a greenroom, with catering, an open bar, and other amenities you’d be accustomed to on the road. It’s a place for them to recharge, get a haircut and some new underwear.”
