Chrysalis Benefit Cuts Ticket Prices in Half, Draws Same Crowd

In the face of the grim economy, Chrysalis didn’t want to have to choose between celebrating its successes with longtime supporters and bankrolling its work with proceeds from big-ticket benefits. So this year the nonprofit, which helps the homeless find employment, adopted a new recession-friendly strategy for its autumn fund-raiser—downsizing from a sit-down dinner to a cocktail party with a ticket price of $175 a head, half the tariff of the lavish 2008 affair at Vibiana, a former cathedral downtown.
The result was a crowd of 350 at Tuesday evening’s 25th anniversary celebration—as many who attended the dinner the year before. “We didn’t lose anybody,” said Chrysalis special event manager Katherine Atkins. “It was good because people were more encouraged to bid on auction items and they could come and go as they please.”

Mindful of Public Perception, Oscar Gift Suites Increase Charity Focus

It's not entirely a new thing for gift suites surrounding big award shows to align themselves with charities. But what's new this Oscar season in Los Angeles is the extent of the suites' focus on (and publicity about) their philanthropic connections—perhaps an effort to ease the perception of celebrity gluttony in the midst of the difficult economic times.
High above Beverly Hills at a private residence, Hachette Filipacchi Media's Haven suite setup began Wednesday and continues through today. By night, the venue is featuring a series of events from studio parties to fashion shows, and by day, the property features spa services like manicures and cellulite-reducing procedures, as well as product gifting. The Creative Coalition and Warren-Tricomi are joining forces with celebrities in attendance to tape public service announcements for the Creative Coalition's "It Starts with the Arts" campaign, a program supporting the arts that will appear in print and broadcast.

Oscar Week: Vanity Fair's Back, Mercedes Moves to Montage, Governors Ball Tones Down, Suites Abound

The catastrophic state of the economy hardly bears repeating here—except to say that it hasn't done much to diminish the sheer number of Academy Awards-related event offerings on this week's calendar, even if it has affected those events' budgets. From an array of suites to Vanity Fair's apparently triumphant return, many guests' dance cards—even in this recession—are completely full.
The plethora of gift and hospitality suites around town include GBK’s “Circus of the Senses” at the SLS Hotel on Friday and Saturday. The event will give 20 percent of its proceeds to four charitable organizations. Melanie Segal’s “Be the Change” Oscar lounge, presented by Sensé Beautiful Science, will take to the Pali House on Thursday and Friday. Silver Spoon’s suite today and tomorrow benefiting the Chrysalis organization offers spa treatments, caviar tasting, and gifts. Stuart Weitzman's Oscar styling suite kicked off yesterday at the London West Hollywood hotel, and runs through Saturday with beauty treatments and a chance to peek at the shoe designer's 2009 red-carpet collection.

On Monday, Laney Kapgan joined the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (Glaad) as the new associate director of corporate relations. In her new role, Kapgan is responsible for fund-raising events, focusing primarily on securing corporate sponsorships and developing corporate relationships to help the nonprofit reach its special events revenue goal of $4 million. She’ll also oversee logistical details like making sure the internal team adheres to timelines and budget restrictions for events like the Glaad Media Awards. Kapgan, who will report to the director of special events and sponsorships, will mostly work on events west of the Mississippi, but will also assist with national projects.
As the former director of special events for Chrysalis, Kapgan helped that organization raise $1.7 million through myriad events, and brought companies like Mercedes-Benz and Saks Fifth Avenue on as sponsors.

Chrysalis's Butterfly Ball Handles Last-Minute Swell at Brentwood Manse

Any event producer who can harness the evening sky as part of his or her decor is a step ahead of the game, and Laney Kapgan, director of special events for Chrysalis, had that and more—a beautiful June night—as the backdrop for the seventh annual Butterfly Ball on Saturday.
The benefit for the organization, which helps homeless people find jobs, is one of young Hollywood's pet events, started by actress Rebecca Gayheart and her ex-fiancé, director Brett Ratner. Dana Walden, president of Twentieth Century Fox TV, co-chaired the event.
The Butterfly Ball's youthful pedigree, its awards to entertainment industry leaders, and its outdoor venue far from hotel ballrooms—the Brentwood home of litigator Hayward Kaiser and Susan Harris—help it attract a substantial following from young Hollywood. But this year, organizers were bracing for dwindling attendance in the wake of the writers' strike. Instead, the event outstripped past years in both fund-raising and turnout, bringing in $1.1 million and 820 guests—with 200 of them joining the rolls not two days before the event.

1. Carousel of Hope
Usually called the Carousel Ball, this red-letter event on L.A.’s social calendar is such a production that it’s held only once every two years. The host is Barbara Davis, half of a Hollywood power couple with her late billionaire husband, former 20th Century Fox owner Marvin Davis. Their A-list friends will turn out in droves at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in October for this fund-raiser for children’s diabetes.
