An invitation to get dressed up and spend an evening spelling words might not exactly qualify as the most exciting prospect on many potential guests' social calendars. So when Hasbro—makers of Scrabble—and St. Judes Children's Research Hospital approached event producers Randi Gelfand and Joe Moller to produce last Thursday night’s 60th anniversary party for the classic board game, the pair knew they had better make the event as enticing as possible.
“The challenges for us on the production end were taking a very old technology, which is the Scrabble board, and featuring it in a way that made it more interesting and relevant in today’s hyper, Internet-driven society,” Moller said. “We had to figure out how to take wooden letters and an old game board and make it interesting to young people.”

Grammy Events: Who's Going Where
|
Across the land—Hollywoodland, that is—a broad array of folks involved with award-season planning have seen their share of disappointments this year. With the writers strike still ongoing (although showing signs of a reprieve) and some events over the last few weeks scaled back or canceled altogether (most notably the intimate fetes known as the Golden Globes and Vanity Fair's Oscar party), the Grammys may start to bring some luster back to the bummer-tinged season. Events related to the music spectacle begin in earnest this Thursday and continue through the weekend.
In fact, Thursday night looks to be one of the busier nights on the slate, with a party at the Getty Center to announce Grammy-nominated classical pianist Lang Lang as the new chairman of the Foundation D'Enterprise Montblanc de la Culture. Later in the evening, at Boulevard3 across town, the Recording Academy will join with In Style for the magazine's first attempt at a fashion show, showcasing the clothing lines of musicians-turned-designers such as Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé, and Jay-Z.

Stuffing bags full of goodies in October is known to be a thrill, but it's typically discouraged for the post-adolescent set. Not so at YMI Jeanswear's fashion show and party, which gave adult guests their own bag-stuffing opportunities—with pricier loot than candy. About 1,000 guests packed Boulevard3's outdoor space on Tuesday for a party at which the denim brand and its sponsors (including Salon Maxime and Hpnotiq) proffered their wares from nine cabanas flanking the venue's fountain. Get Flipped snapped guests' mugs at its lenticular photo booth, and Clothes Off Our Backs reps promoted the charity at another cabana.

Emmy Suites Deliver Eco-Mindedness With Pampering

It might be said that this year's Emmy suites embraced two things that Angelenos are known to care for deeply: the environment and pampering. Whereas last weekend in Las Vegas for MTV's VMAs, we saw suites largely dominated by swag, the Emmy suites focused on green living as well as spa treatments.
Green Living Lifestyle created an eco-friendly lounge at sustainable home store Cisco Home, offering facials with Origins products and manicures and pedicures by Green Bliss Eco Spa featuring Priti nontoxic nail polishes and soy-based polish remover. The event benefited local organizations Communities for a Better Environment L.A. and Million Trees L.A. (This was the second annual Emmy lounge for Green Living Lifestyle; last year the team tricked out the W.)
An eco-conscious thread also ran through the three-day-long suite setup over at Sonya Dakar's palatial spa in Beverly Hills. Green Girl Guide compiled eco-friendly bags that included Nature’s Gate chemical-free eau de toilette; Charmone vegan, sweatshop-free shoes; and an issue of Good magazine, all in a Simple Shoes bag, which uses zippers made from recycled plastic bottles.
