On Friday, we posted a list of winners of BizBash's 2009 Event Style Awards, which were announced on Thursday at a ceremony following our annual expo at the L.A. Mart. Here's more on the winning work.

Best Corporate Event Concept (Over $50,000)
Ellen DeGeneres's 50th Birthday Party
Submitted by Warner Brothers Special Events
To celebrate the TV host’s birthday and her move from NBC to Warner Brothers Studios, Telepictures Productions hosted a celebration that doubled as a segment for the comedian’s show. Organizers designed a vintage carnival and incorporated her favorite things, including dancing and games, as well as some celebrity guests. MORE >>

Paper Magazine Launches Award Show at Los Angeles Project

The pioneers may have headed west in search of gold, but New York-based Paper magazine journeyed here last week in search of something of equal value to an arts- and style-driven publication: a teeming pool of artists and underground talent, and an untapped market of potential readers. For the fourth consecutive year, the magazine made its east-to-west migration, setting up camp in the city to host its Los Angeles Project from November 5 through 9.

“Celebrating the people of Los Angeles is really at the root of the project,” said Drew Elliott, the mag's New York-based vice president of creative services and marketing. “We see amazing artists coming out of L.A., and we want to celebrate and cover them while raising our visibility in the market, which is a big one for us. We’re creating a Paper posse.” MORE >>

Target Transforms Raw Venue With Moving Collages for MTV After-Party

If MTV's demographic can be loosely defined as young and slightly irreverent, so can those words describe the demographic for consumers of the Converse One Star collection recently launched at Target stores. So for Target to host an unofficial MTV Movie Awards after-party last night in honor of the new collection seemed, ahem, right on target.

Target's events and marketing team tapped Cara Kleinhaut of Caravents to produce the party, which featured a fully customized, built-out setup on the Lot's plain Stage 7, meant to create an experience and a look that represented the indie-slash-youth demo that Converse courts. To that end, DJ Steve Aoki spun records for the hipster-heavy crowd of about 500, and M.I.A. performed a high-energy set in her signature genre-busting style and neon costumes. But the big story of the night wasn't just the colorful, crowd-pleasing performance; it was the venue's look, which was a highly visual, multimedia spectacle. MORE >>

Varvatos Benefit for Stuart House Brings Kids' Activities and Cheap Trick

Menswear designer John Varvatos’s sixth annual Stuart House benefit, which helps sexually abused children, again proved a magnet for parents and kids. In fact, the children’s tent—staged in the Varvatos parking lot—was the most popular hangout spot among the crowd.

Tots created Build-A-Bear toys and customized pairs of Converse and noshed on age-appropriate dishes like chicken fingers, mini grilled-cheese sandwiches, and Jell-O cups from Salt Catering. Later, they settled into beanbag chairs for storytelling from celebrities including Angie Harmon and Justin Chambers. MORE >>
