In the News: Evite Losing Event Edge, Ben Stein Wants More Meetings
|
MySpace Events Platform Surpasses Evite: Things aren't so hot these days for former social networking Web site of choice MySpace, but one arena the News Corp. property is succeeding in is online invitations. Traffic reports show that the MySpace events platform has beat out Evite for the first time, with a reported 700,000 invitations sent out every day compared to Evite's 600,000. That doesn't mean MySpace is No. 1, though. Facebook doesn't publish exact figures for its events feature, but it did recently say that the site houses 2.5 million new events per month. [TechCrunch]
Ben Stein Misses Meetings: The American Spectator published an op-ed by former Nixon staffer, media personality, and renaissance man Ben Stein this week, in which he chides the federal government for trying to put the kibosh on business meetings. To add weight to his argument, Stein suggests that meetings of Congress and the Supreme Court are on the same level as business meetings and that eliminating events would do nothing but prolong the recession. Choice line: "Meetings and business travel did not cause this recession." [American Spectator]

SoBe Hosts "Organic-Feeling" Independence Day Pool Party With Barbecue and Games

The Independence Day holiday weekend is arguably the quintessential summer experience: a chance for people to spend time outside, eat barbecue, and hang out with friends. Seizing on the emotional power of the holiday was SoBe Lifewater, which threw a party hosted by Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Rashida Jones at the pool and lounge at the recently restored Hotel Shangri-La in Santa Monica. The party served as a launch for new flavors from the brand.
"It's the essence of what SoBe is all about and what the brand stands for," said SoBe Beverages director Angelique Krembs, who worked with Epiphany Media to produce the party. "The brand really has a heritage of healthy hedonism. It's a combination of healthy and refreshing products, but also a lifestyle—and, at the end of the day, just a lot of fun."
Although SoBe is doing a big marketing push in New York this summer, it chose Los Angeles for the Independence Day party because the target demographic—not to mention the weather—was right. "L.A. felt fitting with the brand," Krembs said. Epiphany managing partner Lisa Chu added, "We wanted to do something celebratory along brand strategy. The 4th is the biggest summer holiday, and because we're doing Summer Fridays in New York, we wanted to spread the love a little bit. L.A. is a great place to target our core consumers: milliennials and tastemakers. L.A. has a cool, sexy beach vibe, but you don't get the overkill and the heat of Miami."

E3's Eye-Popping Exhibits Employ Lots of Video and LED Technology

Welcome to E3, where the men vastly outnumber the women and more languages can be overheard than you might expect at the Tom Bradley international terminal at LAX. Produced by IDG World Expo and owned by the Entertainment Software Association, E3—short for Electronic Entertainment Expo—kicked off Tuesday and wrapped today in the Los Angeles Convention Center’s south and west halls.
This year's show marked a huge leap forward in scope from last year's event, which had a different format that drew a significantly smaller crowd of mostly buyers. As of Thursday morning, 41,000 people from 78 countries had walked the show floor to see 216 exhibitors making hardware and software announcements of importance to the gaming world. "The booths are back in a big way," said a PR rep for the show.
Some exhibits exceeded more typical trade show booths in size by a factor of ten, and many were outfitted with eye-popping technology and decor. (Organizers noted that the installations that typically would have a 10-day load-in period were installed in the show's tighter four-day load-in time.) Here’s a sample of the memorable setups.
