Elle Fetes Hollywood Women With Intimate A-List Bash Awash in White Decor

Every so often comes along an event with enough star wattage to nearly overcome the paparazzi waiting outside. Such was the case at Elle's Women in Hollywood awards on Monday night. A scant 220 guests came to the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills to join the program, and most of those were boldface names—including honorees Katie Holmes, Julianne Moore, Julie Andrews, and Renée Zellweger, and their presenters and industry friends. This year, a 60-foot-long carpet (versus 28 feet last year) helped keep the arrivals scene sane.

The magazine's New York-based special events manager, Caitlin Weiskopf, oversaw the event, tapping Caravents to produce it for the first time. The look was nearly all white, in honor of sponsor Calvin Klein. In the entry area, an Elle-logo plexi wall stood in front of a Four Seasons' fountain, and a gallery of 18 framed images—celebrity beauty shots and imagery that spanned a century—from sponsor L'Oreal Paris lined the walkway. Baubles from sponsor David Yurman decked a display made from materials such as silver trays and mirror detailing, rather than a standard glass case. And at the end of the arrivals carpet, a representative from sponsor Moët encouraged arriving celebrities to sign an oversize bottle of bubbly, which would be  auctioned for the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. As to the sponsors' integrations, they were "a little more modern, more clean, more integrated," than is typical, said Caravents' Cara Kleinhaut. MORE >>

Film Independent's Spirit Awards Heading Downtown to L.A. Live
Film Independent, the nonprofit arts organization that produces the Spirit Awards and the Los Angeles Film Festival, announced Thursday that the 2010 Spirit Awards will be held on Friday, March 5, in a tent on the event deck at L.A. Live—a departure from the show's typical home on the day before the Academy Awards and its most recent Santa Monica location. This time the awards will be handed out two days before the Oscars, which are scheduled for Sunday, March 7.

Over the past 25 years, the event has been held at various locations in Los Angeles, including the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, Beverly Hills Hotel, Hollywood Palladium, and the Santa Monica beach.

"We wanted to do something very special and different for the 25th anniversary by holding the only late-night awards show, where our audience can tune in live at 11 p.m. on the East Coast," said Film Independent executive director Dawn Hudson in the announcement. "Our new venue will still have the laid-back, no-holds-barred atmosphere that only the independent film community can create." Some are nevertheless already speculating the move could change the independent character of the event. MORE >>

Spirit Awards' Pop-Up Sponsor Lounges Look Like Permanent Installations

Backstage guests at Film Independent's Spirit Awards on Saturday found a pair of sponsor lounges that—although they popped up only for event day—seemed as if they might live permanently in the beachside Santa Monica setting. "It took us a week to load in. The tent looked like more like a permanent structure," said Larry Abel, who produced and designed the two lounges for Elle and Piaget. "We put in subfloors and built up from there so that we had some people in there wondering, 'Is this a tent?' And that's what we love to do."

Elle's green room—in which Garnier, Maybelline, Acura, and Lacoste also represented their wares—had a beachy look featuring materials like wooden slats, seashells, and sand, where presenters, winners, select press folks, and miscellaneous non-ticket holders could come to relax (and pick up products from sponsors) before, during, and after the show.

"It's very much in line with the Elle brand," said the magazine's New York-based special events and merchandising manager, Caitlin Weiskopf. "We're about independent style, the high and the low, fun and relaxed. That's what the Spirit Awards are about [too]; it's the fun, cool event during award season where you can wear a pair of designer denim jeans and be next to someone on the carpet wearing YSL—and that's exactly what our brand is about." A scant 200 guests made the invitee list for Elle’s Women in Hollywood event Monday night at the Four Seasons. Chelsea Handler assumed hosting duties for the event, which honored Hollywood icons including Halle Berry, Jane Fonda, Catherine Hardwicke, Anne Hathaway, Salma Hayek, Nicole Kidman, Sigourney Weaver, and Isla Fisher.

Elle’s Eric Johnson oversaw the event for the magazine and worked with Larry Abel/De-signs for production. “The aesthetic we are going with this year is very clean, crisp, fresh—something that we feel is in line with Elle,” said Caitlin Weiskopf, the magazine's special events and merchandising manager, who also worked on the event. Internet Connection: A love of cake and a Craigslist posting brought business partners Elizabeth Belkind and Lisa Olin together. Olin, a film and television producer with a sweet tooth, wanted to open a bakery specializing in individual layer cakes and her favorite childhood treats. With the concept, logo, and bakery name selected, all she needed was a qualified baker. Enter Belkind, a Campanile-trained pastry chef and designer of the dessert menu at contemporary American restaurant Grace. “Because I was familiar with [Belkind’s] background, I knew I wanted her before I even spoke with her,” Olin says. “But then when we met, it was all the better, because we had the same ideas when it came to cakes, like what ingredients and flavors to use.” With their interests in sync, last December the pair launched Cake Monkey Bakery. Elle Takes Over Women in Hollywood Awards

Although Premiere magazine folded earlier this year, its longstanding Women in Hollywood event did not suffer the same fate. Elle, a sister publication at Hachette Filipacchi of the now-defunct movie magazine, hosted the 14th annual tribute on Monday night at the Four Seasons Beverly Hills, continuing Premiere’s tradition of honoring women’s achievement in film.

"Elle was attracted to this signature event, which champions the cause of women getting better roles on-screen," said Brent Allen, the magazine's executive director of marketing. MORE >>
