Golden Globe Parties Return With (Most of) the Familiar Grandeur
HBO's Golden Globes bash

Last night's all-star Golden Globes banished some of the memories of last year's scaled-back press conference with a presence that may have been as glitzy a spectacle as ever—or at least since 2007. Although organizers behind parties like the Weinstein Company's annual awards-night biggie axed their celebrations in this year's tough economy, some newcomers like AMC joined the fray inside the celebrity-and-media-mobbed Beverly Hilton. And a trio of annual parties decked the buzzing hotel with roughly as much production-heavy grandeur as their previous incarnations.

NBC Universal brought about 400 people to a viewing party, and about 800 for an after-party in the same space, where sponsor Cartier showed off jewels from its vault in Paris. The over-the-top baubles in cases made for eye-popping decor that complemented the metallic and black look created by Angel City Designs, whose Mark Yumkas described the space as "a very classic Hollywood look with a contemporary twist." HBO Emmy Party Channels Modernist Brasilia at Under-Construction Design Center

For 20 years or so, HBO has been a favored guest at the Emmys, which the cable channel celebrates with a big bash of its own. Add the yearly Golden Globe party to the mix, and the event team has a lot of themes it can't repeat. So for Sunday's Emmy party, HBO's longtime collaborator Billy Butchkavitz went far afield—5,800 miles away to be exact—to freshen the look of the cable channel's celebration of its landslide of golden statues, which included a record-breaking 13 for the lavish miniseries John Adams. Working with HBO vice president of special events Eileen Rivard, Butchkavitz looked to the modernist utopia of Brasilia for inspiration for the network's sprawling party at its usual haunt—the Pacific Design Center's fountain plaza in West Hollywood.

With Brasilia's principal architect, Oscar Niemeyer, as his spiritual guide and a cheerful palette of topaz blue and tourmaline green, Butchkavitz dressed the space in complementary geometric textiles from Argentina, reborn in HBO's colors, and enormous blow-ups of 23 abstract paintings by South American artists Pastor Berrios Herrera, Roque Menaglio, and Janette Goldberg. Popping against the cool colors were splashes of citrine yellow—gloriosa lilies and cymbidum in vases and centerpieces—and silver: oversize jardinieres made of thin strips of metal, votive holders and centerpieces formed by slender branches pointing upward, and studded parsons tables and seating cubes covered in snakeskin-patterned material. Silver retro-style sculptures modeled after Brazilian artwork decorated buffets. MORE >>

ET and People Take Emmy Party Downtown

With new entries on the Emmy party scene this year—including a big production feat by DirecTV—the established bunch had to work even harder to stand out. Take for example Entertainment Tonight's party last night with People (ET's 11th time on the scene, its fourth hosting with People), which dispensed with its standard Mondrian fare this year and moved downtown to the majestic Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Not only is the party venue only a scant few miles from the award show venue (the Shrine), but it also represented a choice on the part of  CBS vice president of communications for ET and the Insider Lisa Summers Haas and her team (who started scouting locations in January) to break away from the pack. "Downtown is really becoming new and exciting, and it was one of those things where we just thought, Let’s take a chance," she said. MORE >>

Emmy Party Update: ET and People Move Downtown
Entertainment Tonight's Emmy-night party with People magazine is moving away from its typical Mondrian location, into the striking Walt Disney Concert Hall downtown (only three miles from the Shrine Auditorium). CBS vice president of communications Lisa Summers Haas, who is overseeing the event for the fourth year, described her plans as working with "the spirit of the grandness of the venue, with 10-foot-high lamps and eight-foot-high couches. Nothing should take away from the architecture of the building." (Larry Abel De-Signs is building customized furniture.) Godiva, Garnier, Maybelline, and Kodak are on board to sponsor lounge areas.

Expect a more luxurious and exclusive affair than ever, with only 700 invitations going out this year; last year there were 3,000 RSVPs. "We wanted to create a feeling like Vanity Fair's Oscar party," which has also trimmed its already-tight list in recent years, Haas said, adding that the response to the move has been tremendous and that a milelong list of relevant celebrities have already responded.

Organizers announced yesterday that Duran Duran will perform at the event, and we reveal to you that Dave Koz will also perform. (That official announcement will be made on ET tonight.) It will be the first time the event has had two performers. Check back for our full coverage of the event after Emmy night.   —Alesandra Dubin
