TV Academy Honors Producers With Hamptons-Style Party—One of 22 Emmy Season Events

For Barbara Chase, executive producer of special projects for the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, the weeks leading up to the Primetime Emmy Awards on September 20 are as busy as tax season is for an accountant. Between August 24 and Monday evening, when the academy celebrated nominated producers, Chase and event producer Richard Lauter, president of Savore Cuisine & Events, organized 22 bashes for various branches.

Organizers redressed the usually humble courtyard outside the Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre three times, evoking affluent leisure in a Tommy Bahama-style tropical paradise; a clean, contemporary lounge space using dark woods and white upholstery; and a Hamptons-flavored beach escape with tall grasses, glass containers of lemons and shells, and Shabby Chic-style furniture. Guerrilla Marketing Guide: Where to Stage Stunts in Six Cities

Chicago
Where to Go: One of the Windy City’s most iconic locales, the Daley Center, allows marketers to reach consumers—including the lunching masses—under the watchful eye of a 50-foot untitled Picasso sculpture. A few blocks northeast, and just outside the Loop, is Pioneer Court. The petite, extremely busy plaza sits where the Chicago River meets Michigan Avenue and sees most of the 40 million tourists who visit Chicago annually.
What It Takes: The Daley Center’s plaza is owned by MB Real Estate (312.603.7981), which prices permits individually. Pioneer Court is controlled by the Equitable Life Insurance Company and the Chicago Tribune Company, but any event using the streets around it would require permits from the City of Chicago (Office of Special Events, 312.744.0626). Months of red tape and a 28-page application packet might persuade you to go guerrilla instead.
Recent Stunt: When More put future first lady Michelle Obama on its October 2008 cover, the magazine deployed 100 readers to the streets around Pioneer Court to pose with issues—and it didn’t spend a penny on permits.
Who Can Help: Based in Chicago, Legacy Marketing Partners has earned a lot of attention from experiential campaigns like the Stoli Hotel and the mobile Burger King/NFL Challenge. MORE >>

Metromix's Downtown Launch Party: "Radder Than the Oscars"?

In its email newsletter, Metromix promised that last night's Los Angeles launch party for the print version of its online entertainment guide would be “radder than the Oscars.” Even in light of that event's ratings bomb, the claim may have been a touch overblown.

Nonetheless, several hundred guests streamed through the new downtown concert space Crash Mansion, danced to tunes spun by DJs Diplo and Squeak E. Clean, and seemed to follow the sole rule posted on signage from event sponsor Ikea: “Make yourself at home.”

The lounge got a kitschy, cutesy look with pieces from the Swedish furniture line, such as chartreuse and plum-colored couches, psychedelic rugs, and brightly colored throw pillows—price tags still attached. Framed Metromix covers added to the decor, and the latest edition of the entertainment guide was on hand for guests to grab. The homey feel continued on the venue’s main concert floor, where guests could take a breather on leather couches decked with faux-fur throws.   —Laura Kasavan
