Despite some notable high-profile absences, there are still plenty of contenders for guests' time on the Grammy week calendar this year—including some newcomers to the scene.
On Monday, Will.i.am and Gen Art kicked off the week with the opening night of the "Worlds on Fire" artist exhibition downtown. Portraits honored 2009 nominees such as Al Green, Beck, Beyoncé, Bruce Springsteen, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Lil’ Wayne, Madonna, M.I.A, Nas, Nine Inch Nails, Paul McCartney, and Radiohead. Jacob’s Creek supplied beverages, and guests browsed a silent auction. Proceeds benefited the Black Eyed Peas’ Peapod Foundation and other local charities for L.A. youth. The exhibit runs through Sunday at the Pacific Electric Lofts.

Why So Few Parties Around the VMAs in L.A.?
|
With MTV's Video Music Awards in Hollywood this year—the place with the highest concentration of celebrities anywhere—common logic might have led one to believe that the awards-related party circuit would have been as robust as ever. But not so much.
Apart from MTV's official after-party at Paramount, In Touch Weekly's bash at the Chateau Marmont may have been the biggest of the night. And although the rest of the weekend was indeed cluttered with the usual gift and hospitality suites and miscellaneous parties, it seemed to lack some of the big-ticket luster of past years. Last September's incarnation in Las Vegas included at least 10 big parties—not including all those suites—a number that makes this year's handful of bashes look rather anemic. One vendor told us last year, "There were so many concurrent events in town that it was chaos. This was huge—a huge feat.” This year an anonymous vendor said in contrast, "We noticed that events were way down—the parties are definitely down."
So, why?

Unofficial VMA After-Parties Lure Guests With Full-Scale Concerts

Last night's MTV Video Music Awards show at Paramount Studios presented musical acts including Rihanna, the Jonas Brothers, and Kanye West, and after-party hosts Pepsi and In Touch Weekly kept their events music-centric as well, in hopes of luring guests away from the lot, where MTV hosted its official after-party. Live musical performances were the focus at Pepsi's Blue Carpet Bash and In Touch's "Icons & Idols" party Sunday night.
Pepsi took over the Avalon Hollywood with its second annual Blue Carpet Bash program, which consists of a series of after-parties following events in the music industry, including the Billboard Latin Music Awards and the Latin Grammys. Pepsi multicultural marketing brand manager Angelina Ramirez oversaw the event, which presented De La Ghetto, producer Ryan Leslie together with rapper Fabolous, and Tyga paired with Gym Class Heroes’ Travis McCoy on a stage awash in blue lighting and featuring a curtain backdrop decorated with a Pepsi Blue Carpet Bash gobo. Lighting in the brand’s signature blue hue also decorated bars, and—true to the event’s name—a blue carpet sat outside the venue.

Of course, MTV has a packed lineup of official events related to its Video Music Awards in town this weekend, but unofficial events also abound. Here, some of the entries on the weekend calendar:
Blender will host an intimate group of about 150 for cocktails and hors d'oeuvres on Saturday at Bardot in Hollywood in honor or nominee Katy Perry. Franki Chan will DJ.
Good Charlotte and the Veronicas will perform, and Samantha Ronson will DJ, at In Touch Weekly's "Icons & Idols" party on Sunday after the awards. The party—sponsored by Tigi Bed Head, Three Olives, and Burger King—will be held at the Chateau Marmont. Vox Entertainment will handle the sound, lighting, and staging for the concert.

Crown Royal, In Touch Host Friday-Night Derby Fetes in Louisville

Several big-name brands showed up in Louisville over the weekend to host events surrounding the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby. Dubbed the Run for the Roses, the horse race has become a breeding ground for tabloid-friendly celebrities—and where celebrities go, endorsement-seeking brands follow. (Ubiquitous types like The Hills' Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt, model Molly Sims, Entourage's Adrian Grenier, and former Miss USA Tara Conner were on the scene.)
"The Derby is one of our favorite events," said Hi-Fi Marketing Group partner Brian Gefter, who produced Friday's In Touch Weekly Parlor party with his partner Mike Satsky. "We do all of these parties around national event properties like Super Bowl, but the reason the Derby is appealing to us is that it’s very celebrity-driven but it’s less cluttered. There's a real chance to make a huge impact in an area where there aren’t as many events going on, as, say, the Super Bowl."
Playboy division vice president of creative services Donna Tavoso, who produced the Crown Royal Lounge on Friday night, said, "I think as more and more people realize that the Derby is a celebrity event and a great consumer event, they are drawn to the whole idea. It's not surprising that others want to throw a party [on the Friday night before the Derby]. That said, we know the level and quality of the party we throw, and we rest on that reputation."
