Glut of Events This Week—Across Industries—Points to Fall Season Pickup
|
Earlier this month, we reported that event professionals expected the fall season to bring back an abundance of events—and if this week in Los Angeles is any indication, business is back big time.
Tonight brings events across all industries, from entertainment (a screening and cast performance of Fame, handled by ELS at the Grove, and the Zombieland premiere, produced by 15/40 Productions at the Chinese Theatre) to retail (Target's U.C.L.A. promotion) to music (the inaugural Ooh La L.A. French music festival, produced by Goldenvoice at the Henry Fonda Theatre through Friday) to charitable causes (pet adoptions, cocktails, and fund-raising at L.A. Dogworks).
The event industry has its own event, ISES's Jam networking and trade show event at the Millenium Biltmore. Participating organizations include ISES Orange County and San Diego, M.P.I. Southern California, Wedding Industry Professionals Association, Association of Bridal Consultants, Set Decorators Society of America, Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International, and others. Expect a flurry of tweeting from the floor.

FROM TORONTO
The four Harajuku girls Gwen Stefani employed for her 2004 solo tour weren't around to promote the new Harajuku Lovers fragrances in Canada—but they were emulated by models dressed in short skirts and pigtails as part of manufacturer Coty Prestige's traveling Harajuku Lovers Fragrance Lounge, which visited several locations in Toronto and Montreal from Thursday to Saturday. They also inspired Stefani's new fragrances, with each of the four girls, plus Gwen, representing one of the five scents.
"The fragrances are really fun, and we wanted to get the girls involved in the event," said Kim Husted, director of marketing at Coty Canada. The lounge—held in the Jam Van, a 24-foot vehicle designed for experiential marketing events—promoted the new scents in high schools, malls, movie theatres, and nightclubs in Toronto and Montreal over the three-day period. The mini tour started October 2 with a media preview.

Macy's Takes Passport Fashion Show to Big Screen

The runway at Macy’s 26th annual Passport fashion show and AIDS fund-raiser last Thursday doubled as a dance floor of sorts, serving as a stage for as many dancers as it did models. The show, which is known for its spectacular catwalk antics—unicycle stunt riders and a live horse have taken the runway in past years—relied heavily on dancers this year to inject the presentation at the Barker Hangar with what producer Larry Hashbarger refers to as its trademark “theatrical elements.”
Brian Friedman, who has choreographed routines for artists such as Janet Jackson and Britney Spears, served as the choreographer and creative director for the dance sequences, which included salsa numbers, a routine performed on a moving staircase, and a piece that paired MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew winners Jabbawockeez with a group of 14 children.

1. Fashion Week
Twice a year, Smashbox Studios hosts a set of runway shows and related events under the Fashion Week umbrella, with title sponsor Mercedes-Benz; after-parties and unaffiliated shows take over Hollywood and other parts of town. Its scope is undeniably smaller than New York’s Fashion Week, but it’s L.A.’s equivalent of all the hoopla, and it’s growing. The most recent installment bowed in October.

African Dance Meets Burlesque on Macy's Runway

Macy's Passport fashion show has a way of bringing together surprising combinations that rarely share a stage. Last year, for instance, it was rapper Diddy, fiery hoops, and a trotting show horse. This year, Dita Von Teese, unicycle stunt riders, a troupe of Ugandan dancers, and Calvin Klein underwear models all took to the runway in the name of raising money for AIDS research and care at the 25th anniversary event at Santa Monica Airport's Barker Hangar on Thursday. Macy's Larry Hashbarger oversaw the production of the show, and Macy's David Miranda oversaw the evening's party.
A big-top-themed party preceded the main event in an adjacent tent (which reopened at the end of the night for a dessert reception). Cirque du Soleil entertainers performed on stage, and models painted like circus animals writhed in cages and along the floor, interacting with guests as they sampled food from such local eateries as Republic and Angelini Osteria. Along Came Mary set up what at first glance appeared to be a sundae bar, but cubes of white cake replaced ice cream in the standard equation. The bars closed promptly at 7:30 to encourage guests to move next door to the hangar for the live auction and fashion show.
