Allergan Launches Eyelash Enhancer Amid Brow Pluckers, On-Site Docs, and a Museum-Style Exhibit

Here's something that might fit squarely in the only-in-Los Angeles file. Allergan—the maker of Botox—has launched a product called Latisse, an FDA-approved, prescription-only tonic designed to grow longer, fuller eyelashes. Allergan's senior manager of corporate communications, Heather Katt, worked with the Chandler Chicco Agency and Harrison & Shriftman on a launch party that looked sleek while playing up multiple L.A. stereotypes at once.
The party space—an old retail unit at 800 North La Cienega—got a stylized design, with mostly white decor and carpet, and lighting that bathed the rooms in candy hues. Cala lily centerpieces sat in long troughs decorated with a black graphic print, and LED tubes hung from the ceiling for a slightly futuristic look. Drawing inspiration from Philippe Starck, Marcel Wanders (designer of Miami's Mondrian hotel), and an all-white minimalist beauty pop-up store he once saw in Japan, Harrison & Shriftman's Ryan Jordan created a look he described as "a futuristic vibe for a revolutionary product, an environment that's very chic and sophisticated, not too clinical or pharmaceutical."

Make-A-Wish Brings 94 Wineries to Moulin Rouge-Themed Fund-Raiser

Samples from 94 wineries and 28 restaurants were on offer at the Make-A-Wish Foundation's annual Uncork a Wish wine tasting and auction at the Santa Monica airport's Barker Hangar. The organization's 15th annual fund-raiser on Saturday featured a Moulin Rouge theme, with costumed performers greeting guests at the entrance and a performance by cabaret group the Glamazons.
At the entrance, a large ice sculpture featuring the nonprofit's logo doubled as a martini bar, with cocktails from sponsor Ciroc. Beyond were tables set with silent-auction items including art, jewelry, vacation packages, cars, and kid-friendly activities. Wineries and restaurants set up their stations on the perimeter of the facility and offered tastings for the estimated 1,500 guests.

How to Choose an Auctioneer

As event professionals well know, one of the key aspects of producing a successful live auction occurs months out, as staffers, board members, and friends of the organization secure (read: often beg for) items so unique, so desirable, that attendees (with the added bonus of helping a good cause) will open up their wallets to get them. Let’s say you’ve scored walk-on roles on Grey’s Anatomy and The Office, a private performance by Hannah Montana, and the guitar on which Bruce Springsteen wrote “Born to Run.” Your work is done: This stuff sells itself, right?
Unfortunately, no. On the night of an event, the duty of moving live auction items, ideally for impressive sums, falls to the person taking—and, hopefully, nudging up—the bids. So what makes an effective auctioneer, and how much can your choice affect the success of an auction—and ultimately, the bottom line?

Wish Night Gala Resuscitates Monkees Music

If heartstring-tugging wasn't enough incentive for guests to turn up at the Make-A-Wish Foundation's eighth annual Wish Night gala at the Beverly Hills Hotel on Friday, there was at least one rarely seen entertainer in the room to keep things interesting: Monkees veteran Micky Dolenz. “We wanted to spice it up this year, and we had a dance floor—something that we haven’t done in the past,” said the org's special events director, Tessa Bowser. M.C. Joel McHale also brought his controversial, cheeky sense of humor to the mix.
