A High-Flying Dining Experience

For hard-to-impress guests who’ve been there, done that, Dinner in the Sky offers a chance to dine in one of the more unusual (and expensive) venues around—a table suspended 180 feet in the air. Developed in Brussels in 2006, the service launched in the U.S. and Canada earlier this summer.
For a starting price of $30,000, 22 people can dine for eight hours (or larger groups can take turns in shorter shifts) over any 100- by 50-foot area that is accessible for a crane and a truck with a trailer. Although the views are great, this is no white tablecloth restaurant. There isn’t a bathroom, and guests are strapped into leather seats that are secured to the dining table and connected to a crane, which lifts the group. The center of the table has a walking platform that can accommodate five staff members to prepare and serve food, take photos, or lead a meeting or sales pitch. Food and service is not included, and hosts can bring in their own chef. Branding and sponsorship opportunities are also available. For a Nokia event held in Las Vegas in March, the company displayed its logo on both sides of the structure’s ceiling and guests’ chair backs.

New Nokia Products Make Movies (and Take Drink Orders) at Gen Art Event
|

On Wednesday, a face-painted man wearing a pink shirt and toting a green water gun wove his way through the stylish crowd assembled at the River East Art Center for Gen Art and Nokia's Art in Motion event. The colorful guest was part of one of three films that were shot on site, as emerging filmmakers commissioned by Gen Art made short movies using Nokia's N95 8GB device.
The moviemaking (a concept cooked up in a collaboration between Gen Art and Smartfusion, Nokia's experiential marketing agency) was only one of the ideas that Gen Art Chicago's regional event director, Laura Lachman, executed for the event, which was intended to showcase the cutting-edge capabilities of Nokia's N95 and N810 devices.
Guests had the option of ordering drinks the old-fashioned way (by bellying up to the bar) or by taking a more technological route: Nokia reps standing at three highboys held N810 Internet tablets that they used to type in guests' drink requests. The orders went electronically to a computer behind the bar, and a server brought the drink orders to the tables within a matter of minutes.

Nokia Slides Undercover Promotion Into Gen Art Party

Gen Art's event with Nokia at the A+D Museum last night took on a decidedly C.I.A.-inspired flavor, with guests unknowingly showing up to be part of a covert movie-making operation. The event was disguised as an art exhibition, with pieces on view throughout the space, but the exhibit was in fact a cover for the event's real core: Three filmmakers came in with casts, crews, and story lines and filmed three movies in the room during the event on Nokia's new Nseries phone, which the brand claims has impressive film and video capabilities. Guests received cards with a Web address where they can check out the finished products next week and vote for the best.
"People think they're coming to check out great artists, which they are," said Gen Art's regional production director, Matt Wise, before the reveal. "But they're also going to be in three movies filmed entirely on phones. Cool, right?" —Alesandra Dubin
