New City Ordinances May Threaten Product-Filled Malibu Beach Houses
As the Malibu beach house season heads into its last big-bash weekend, The Los Angeles Times reports that next year the party might be over for the pop-up venue trend there. Malibu residents have complained that three corporate-financed party houses sponsored by Polaroid, LG, and BeachBody with Silver Spoon clog streets, block driveways and fire hydrants, create noise problems, and cause paparazzi to swarm the beach.

This is the second year for the houses; last year, the parties were smaller and nearby homeowners looked the other way. However, with the frequency of parties this year, neighbors complained to the city, which will attempt to take action with an ordinance limiting events for next year. Jessica Meisel, whose Fingerprint Communications oversees the Polaroid house, says, "The city of Malibu should be happy at the property values we're raising. It's definitely better for them to be known internationally."   —Lesley Balla

Good ideas tend to proliferate. And taking over a house on a sweet piece of Malibu real estate for a summer of logo-heavy, press-magnet events appears to be an idea that works. In addition to Polaroid's beach house (which Fingerprint Communications oversees), BeachBody got on board this year with its own property. The fitness brand partnered with Silver Spoon (back for its second year on the scene) on the summer retreat, which is more freebie-focused than Polaroid's and is hosting more private—or, let's face it, faux-private—social events such as Lindsay Lohan's and Jessica Simpson's birthday parties. When people in other parts of the country conjure (or fantasize about) Southern California, the image might involve something like beaches, surfing, celebrities and beautiful people, and endless summer. And that essentially summed up the scene at Boost Mobile's barbecue at the Polaroid Beach House in Malibu on Saturday, which dispensed with the ho-hum party fare by offering surf lessons on the beach in front of the property.

Alongside pro surfers such as Kelly Slater, Sunny Garcia, Rob Machado, and Ian Walsh, guests tried their luck in lessons given by instructors on the Boost Mobile team. There were no waves to speak of on the warm summer afternoon, but folks took to the water nonetheless. Billabong gear, boards, and wetsuits were on hand for guests to borrow (and freebie Boost Mobile T-shirts were scattered around the house for guests to take home).
