Using just cardboard, copper wire, bare canvas, shoe boxes, tape, paint, aluminum foil, and abundant imagination, Redcat—the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater—in downtown Los Angeles whipped up a lavish fifth anniversary gala dinner on Saturday evening that would have made any recession-minded host proud.

Los Angeles-based artists Miwa Matreyek of Cloud Eye Control and Scoli Acosta designed the benefit. They began their work in earnest in September, just as the economy began to implode. “As the world economic crisis was unfolding, we were fond of the idea of doing something simply elegant, not outlandish and not slick and not garish—simple materials with extraordinary effect,” said Mark Murphy, executive director of Redcat, who planned the event with Clara Kim, the contemporary arts center’s gallery director and curator, and Chris Mannino, its director of development. Redcat Stages Underwater Opera at Anniversary Celebration

The theater Redcat celebrated its fifth anniversary atop downtown hotel the Standard on Wednesday with a party that included some particularly eye-catching entertainment: an underwater opera by Juliana Snapper. About 300 guests gathered around the pool at the venue to watch Snapper’s performance, a concept she conceived and has been performing since last year. Snapper entered the pool and sang directly into water using her bouche a l'eau (mouth-to-water) technique, while a projection of the underwater piece shone on an adjacent building.

Other performances included musical and staged acts from Ann Magnuson, Carl Hancock Rux, Kristina Wong, and DJs David J and Aurelito & Shakespeare of I & I Sound System. The Redcat organization partnered with arts publication ForYourArt and the Standard for the event.   —Shilpa Gopinath
