Amid the fanfare of the premiere for Michael Jackson's This Is It, which showed on all 14 of its screens on October 27, Regal Cinemas at L.A. Live officially opened for business. The 140,000-square-foot theater complex is the new West Coast flagship of Regal Cinemas, and its opening marks the near completion of the L.A. Live development.

The new venue includes what it bills as the largest theater with stadium seating in the country. There are 3,795 seats in all, ranging from 100 to 290 per auditorium; each auditorium has high-back reclining seats, retractable cup holders, and high-end digital projection and sound systems. The complex also houses four auditoriums equipped with Real D-3D digital projection systems, making them ready to handle 3-D film releases. MORE >>

With the fall season approaching, a slate of new venues is under construction around town—some of which have been in the pipeline for years. Here's a sample of what to expect as summer gives way to autumn and winter in Los Angeles.

1. The opening on Monday of a job placement office for hundreds of workers to staff the new W Hollywood property generated more buzz and optimism—not to mention news coverage—surrounding the venue. When it opens in December, the venue will offer 10,000 square feet of meeting space and 25,000 square feet of overall special event space. The W will also offer a pool with day beds, cabanas, and a bar, and a variety of restaurant and nightlife offerings, including Drai's Hollywood from Las Vegas nightlife impresario Victor Drai.

2. Further west, Haute Los Angeles is a West Hollywood nightclub and lounge with an expected opening date in October. Couture fashion and style have influenced the decor and feel of the space, which will cater to special events. It is the first Los Angeles venture from international hotelier Bert Hurstfield. Grauman's Chinese Theater Up for Sale, Mann to Vacate Westwood Venues
Warner Brothers and Viacom are increasing their efforts to unload some local movie theaters, including Hollywood's storied Grauman's Chinese in Hollywood, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Decision makers at Cinemerica—the joint venture of Warner Brothers and Viacom that operates Mann Theatres—think it's the right time to sell at least one Mann venue, with Grauman's and the Criterion Theatre on the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica at the top of the list of possibilities. (The visibility of and traffic around Grauman's—a popular choice for movie premieres—is also increasing after the August 1 opening of Madame Tussauds next door.)

Mann will vacate the Bruin and Village theaters, two Westwood venues often used in conjunction for simultaneous screenings at movie premieres (and often divided into A-list and B-list crowds) in March unless negotiations extend those leases. The fall season will likely bring another challenge to the Westwood theaters: Regal Cinemas expects to open a 14-plex at L.A. Live that will vie for the big premieres.   —Alesandra Dubin
