Simpsons Halloween-Carnival Party Shows Episode on 60-Foot Screen
|
Now a two-decade-old brand, The Simpsons has had plenty of time to establish itself as a playful, even slightly subversive, household name. Apropos of the show's reputation, the party for The Simpsons 20th anniversary and "Treehouse of Horrors" Halloween episode took on the look and feel of a cartoonish carnival. Fox Broadcasting Company special events producer Bob Stillo oversaw the production of the event—all done with family-friendly touches and Halloween overtones—with production and design by Angel City Designs.
The October 18 event for about 1,200 guests filled Barker Hangar with games like Twister played on a huge inflatable board, and bowling with a willing human strapped into a giant ball. Simpsons toys served as prizes for game winners. Guests could scoop up custom T-shirt designs from a silk-screening station by Hit & Run or pose for a photo op in front of a Simpsons step-and-repeat complete with a prop and accessory station.

Human Cannonball Launches Universal Studios' Simpsons Ride

It may be increasingly hard to get someone's attention in this zillion-channel universe, but there's nothing like a good old-fashioned human cannonball to get people to put down their forks.
With that in mind, Universal Studios Hollywood heralded the opening of the Simpsons Ride on May 17 with what organizers termed “an explosive welcome.” As a massive crowd of press people and invited guests awaited the critical moment, women in tall blue Marge wigs helped them keep up their strength by serving a brunch spread of “nuclear plant salad” (tomatoes and mozzarella) and “Bart's cowabunga sliders” (chicken-salad sliders). Stiltwalkers paraded around the plaza in front of the ride, while a five-man band played oompah music.

Building Buzz With Videos: The Simpsons Kwik-E-Marts

This story is part of our series on building event buzz with online videos.
In a joint marketing promotion to publicize the 2007 release of The Simpsons Movie, 20th Century Fox transformed 12 North American 7-Eleven stores into Kwik-E-Marts, inspired by the parody convenience store frequented by Homer Simpson in the fictional town of Springfield.
Because of the tie-in to The Simpsons, a long-running show with a fervent fan base, the marketing event had particular resonance online. Fan forums and blogs were abuzz with news about where the makeshift Kwik-E-Marts would be. When the stores debuted in towns from Bladensburg, Maryland, to Burbank, California, excited fans at each location walked through with handheld cameras and posted their videos online. As a result, a marketing promotion that might have attracted only curious passersby instead reached a worldwide audience of tens of thousands.

Break-Dancers Kick Off Simpsons Game

The release of a new video game is, for some, the kind of great news that would make Snoopy dance. But since the game in question is inspired by another, edgier cartoon, Electronic Arts Inc.’s The Simpsons Game, the October 30 launch at the Hard Rock Cafe Hollywood was celebrated by three break-dancers instead, who seemed to defy gravity on outdoor and indoor stages while garbed in Simpsons-yellow T-shirts.
Naturally enough, the rest of the entertainment was provided by The Simpsons Game, which was loaded on consoles that circled the bar. Gamers kept up their strength with mini burgers, crudités, and chocolate chip cookies. Ardent fans took photographs with brave souls in Homer and Bart Simpson costumes throughout the evening. Plumbago Productions produced the event, and Entertainment Fusion Group handled the PR and celebrity wrangling. —Irene Lacher

Fox Pulls Cartoonish Stunts for All-Yellow Simpsons Premiere

The fanfare surrounding The Simpsons Movie was hardly subtle. Fox held its world premiere in the cartoon characters’ newly recognized official hometown of Springfield, Vermont (a town that won a contest among various Springfields for the honor), and staged a promotional stunt that converted a dozen 7-Elevens across the country into the cartoon series’ fictional Kwik-E-Marts. So why shouldn't the Los Angeles film premiere be anything less than over the top, too?
“The Simpsons is obviously a very important brand to Fox,” said 20th Century Fox Film Corporation vice president of special events Len Iannelli, who oversaw Tuesday’s event. “This movie has been 18 years in the making, and we wanted to do something special to celebrate its launch, something worthy of the Simpsons brand.”
What better way to herald that brand than with a 59-foot-tall replica of Marge’s unmistakable beehive? The inflatable blue beacon sat atop the Mann Village Theatre, directly across from the Mann Bruin, where an inflatable installation of Homer’s famous bald pate rose over the marquee.
