The annual exhibition and sale Photo L.A. kicked off with a reception to benefit Lacma with notably fewer sponsors than past years.
The harsh economic climate has not spared the art community. Its members found a scaled-back opening reception last night at the Barker Hangar for the 18th annual Photo L.A. exhibition and sale, put on by Artfairs Inc. “In the past, we’ve had more food sponsors participating—a buffet type thing where it’s a sampling; we’ve had about a dozen restaurants," said Photo L.A. director Stephen Cohen. "This year, things are a little different with the economy; it’s harder for restaurants to do this.”

Reception ticket holders got a first look (and first dibs on purchases) at the exhibition and viewed thousands of photos on display from local, national, and international galleries.

The look included white lighting—appropriate to showcase the photography on display—a heated tent at the entrance, gray carpeting, white walls separating the galleries, and sporadic red accent walls to make the space pop. The few sponsors were situated toward the back of the venue, attracting a crowd that gathered in the small area throughout the evening.

The exhibition will be on display for public viewing and purchase through the weekend and will feature a discussion series hosted by Lacma. Ticket sales from the opening reception will also benefit the museum.
