| Malibu's Sunset Restaurant Overhauls Decor, Amps Up Event Offerings |
|
The Sunset Restaurant, a former cottage that offers million-dollar oceanfront views in every direction, first opened in 2003, but has just fully overhauled its interior decor—and is shifting its focus toward event bookings and buyouts.
The Malibu beachfront location makes the space prime for event bookings, and it can accommodate about 300 guests for receptions, including the use of the adjacent outside space. The venue is also open to multiday bookings for extended corporate programming, like the beach house pop-ups that have taken to Malibu of late. Kelly Ann Maurice is the director of events and oversees the bookings. |

Designer Janette Mallory installed the new interior decor, which is billed as "beach chic." The downstairs bar offers banquette seating with plush pillows covered in antique nautical fabrics. Zebra-patterned and navy ottomans accompany African-inspired side tables, and shells and crystal light fixtures dot the space. Dark woods, sea grass wall coverings, and a chalkboard menu are among the materials used in the look. The elevator that takes guests to the private White Room upstairs has a black-on-black palette with antique lighting and zebra carpeting. The formal dining room has vintage oars, black-and-white photographs, coral-filled urns, and tufted white leather dining chairs. The bistro has room for 65; the special event room, 120; and the White Room, 59.
Popular dishes in the restaurant include lobster and roasted poblano grilled cheese with heirloom tomato bisque; fresh kumamoto oysters in strawberry and black pepper mignonette; and local halibut with arugula pesto couscous.
