| A Preview of Coachella Art |
|
With the huge Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival beginning April 27, we bring you some news about what to expect on the Empire Polo Field—other than a packed, eclectic music lineup, which spans three days this year for the first time. The Do Lab, a group of artists who create sculptures and installations for events, is working on an acre-large environment, populated by huge rattan and fabric flowers and pods. The area will feature 36 hours of entertainment and musical programming, with a stage where the Lucent Dossier Vaudeville Cirque troupe will do unusual performances. Their costumes, as well as the stage, will be equipped with plumbing material, which will spray guests and keep them cool in the desert heat.
For the past two years, the Do Lab has worked on a 60-foot geodesic dome on the festival site, but that dome only held about 300 people beneath it. “We were going to do it again this year, but [Coachella’s producers at Goldenvoice] wanted us to be able to expand on it and entertain more people. Our environment this year will hold about 4,000 to 5,000 people,” said Do Lab co-owner Jesse Flemming. “From what I’ve heard, Goldenvoice felt like they already nailed the music part of the festival, and now they really want to increase the art impact. They increased their art budget and gave us a great opportunity.”
