Obama's First State Dinner Calls on Marcus Samuelsson, Jennifer Hudson

The Obamas are set to host their first state dinner tonight, feting Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh under a large windowed tent on the White House South Lawn. State dinners have often been held in the East Room, which only has a capacity of 140, and reports say tonight's head count will be closer to 320.

Although news outlets are still awaiting official details about the dinner and invitees from Michelle Obama's office, details are already trickling out—from the American wines being served and the menu's Indian components (green curry prawns, coconut aged basmati) to the emerald green table linens and performance by Jennifer Hudson. The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles celebrated its 30th anniversary with a gala on November 14—and the benefit broke fund-raising records for the museum: The event for 1,000 guests—including Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, and Jeff Koons—took in $4 million.

Poll Results: Informal Nights Out Make Most Appropriate 2009 Holiday Parties

Holiday parties are about to kick into full swing, and according to our latest poll, they shouldn't be too over the top. Half of the participants in last week's survey think that informal nights out at bars or restaurants feel appropriate this year. Only 13 percent of readers think that full, catered affairs are in order, but even fewer—8 percent—think festivities should be kept inside the office. Still, another 29 percent feel that parties should be judged on a case by case basis, by the performance of the company.

This week we'd like to see what kind of entertainment you've booked recently. What did you do the last time you needed cocktail party music? Let us know by partipating in the poll on the left column of the home page.

MOCA Gala Spawning Arty Online Auction—Including Gehry's Hat for Gaga—Through November 30

The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles gala—complete with Lady Gaga performing the world premiere of her new song, "Speechless," with dancers from the Bolshoi Ballet—goes off tomorrow for about 900 guests, but an online auction will continue the fund-raising efforts through November 30. The museum will auction a Damien Hirst-created Steinway & Sons grand piano live at the 30th anniversary event, which will kick off an online auction of artwork created for Francesco Vezzoli’s Ballets Russes Italian Style (The Shortest Musical You Will Never See Again), a one-time performance work commissioned by MOCA for the gala.

Online bidding for the works, which include costumes by artists and designers Frank Gehry, Baz Luhrmann, Catherine Martin, Miuccia Prada, and Vezzoli, will run through the end of the month, with proceeds benefitting MOCA’s exhibition and education programs. Specifically, the hat worn by Gaga and designed by Gehry, masks worn by Gaga and Vezzoli and designed by Luhrmann and Martin, and costumes worn by Gaga and the dancers and designed by Prada and Vezzoli are among the one-of-a-kind offerings. Poll Results: Readers Judge Invitations on Case-by-Case Basis

Invitations will always make the first impression of any event, and these days, our readers are choosing what impression to make on an individual basis. Nearly 50 percent of respondents in last week's poll said that the type of invite depends on the event. The other half of respondents were split almost equally between those in favor of anything fun and creative and the camp that thinks paperless is always the way to go. One thing planners aren't looking at these days are over-the-top invites. None of the respondents to last week's poll think extravagant invitations are appropriate right now.

This week we'd like to see what you think feels right for 2009 holiday parties. Let us know by checking out the current poll on the left column of the home page.

In a Crowded Festival Market, A.F.I. Moves to Offer Free Tickets

In a congested festival marketplace—and a tough year—the American Film Institute's 23-year-old A.F.I. Fest is offering free tickets to all festival screenings this week. A.F.I. and presenting sponsor Audi made the move this year to supply complimentary tickets to the screenings, including a limited number of seats at the evening shows and galas, including the festival's opening and closing nights.

The idea is known as "See a Film on Us," and as part of the plan, organizers reduced the number of feature films from about 100 to about 60, and short films by half to about 25; all seats are fully committed under the new plan, an attractive arrangement for sponsors. MORE >>

Australian Nonprofit Uses Facial Hair for Guerrilla Cause Marketing

Movember, an Australian nonprofit that raises money and awareness for men's cancers via mass mustache growth each November, comes from fairly fortuitous beginnings. In its first year, founders just sprouted their whiskers for fun, before realizing the conversations started by ironic facial hair could have a positive effect.

"It just came to us over some beers on a Sunday night in Melbourne," said Movember co-founder Adam Garone. "The original idea was just to bring them back for a joke, and 30 of our friends participated for no particular reason that November. Every guy had a lot of fun, but all of us had gotten grief from bosses and girlfriends over the month."

That was 2003. Garone and his friends had enough fun with their month of mustaches to try it again the next year, but to placate their friends and colleagues, they decided to make it a fund-raising effort. MORE >>
