Sponsors and "Free Sh*t" Abound at Metromix.com's Lollapalooza Music Lounge

From August 1 through August 3, otherwise known as Lollapalooza weekend, Chicago's Hard Rock Hotel became "the Music Lounge Presented by Metromix.com," a crowd-and-heat respite for artists, media, industry folks, and V.I.P. ticket holders. Open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, the lounge was produced by BMF Media and located across the street from Grant Park.

Daytime activities, which took place on two levels, included everything from Guitar Hero to complimentary tattoos and gifting suites. At the temporary Eastsport Café, sponsored by the bag manufacturer, guests took advantage of free China Grill-catered lunches, Bustelo coffee drinks, and Ciroc-spiked cocktails with thematic names like the Diddy. Rock the Vote Nights, also presented by Metromix.com, overtook the Music Lounge from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. each evening, featuring performances from the likes of Samantha Ronson.

With the Ciroc cocktails flowing and the music pumping, guests seemed to be in high spirits; some even offered hugs in lieu of comments. Those who did speak up, however, had plenty to say about swag, sponsorship, and the lounge's "vibe."

"This whole experience makes me feel like a kid in a sweets shop. I'm just taking in everything with a little look here, a little taste there. My favorite part of the gifting suite? I'd say the bling [Skullcandy gave out necklaces with silver or gold skull-shaped charms.] That's what we all need: bling, bling, bling."

BET Awards Performance Lineup Was "Off the Chain"

D.L. Hughley served as host at Tuesday night’s BET Awards at the Shrine Auditorium, where black entertainers scooped up their honors amid a long list of performers. Outside the auditorium was a throng of guests, wannabe guests, CD-hawking loiterers, and fans who wanted to catch a glimpse of the stars on the black carpet. We asked the the actual ticket-holding crowd on their way out of the show what they thought of the production.

“BET has definitely stepped it up. Doing a live program is something they didn’t do in the past. The performances and talent were great.”
Steve Cover, owner, Alador & Smith apparel brand

"I didn’t like the location this time. They had it at the Kodak Theatre when I first started going. There was more room to park, and you can hang out [in the Hollywood & Highland Center]. They had a bar you could go to; they don’t even let you close to it here.”

MTV Movie Awards Crowd Liked Celebrity Gaffes, Return of Wayne's World

The MTV Movie Awards show did go on at the Gibson Amphitheatre at Universal Citywalk last night, despite yesterday’s blazing fire at Universal Studios. The Mike Myers-hosted event doled out golden popcorn statuettes to a bevy of entertainers including Will Smith, Johnny Depp, and Ellen Page, and featured comedy from Myers, plus musical performances by Coldplay and the Pussycat Dolls. Out in front, we asked guests what they thought of this year’s program as they exited the show and made their way to the after-party. Here’s what they had to say:

“A lot of fun; open bar. It’s a lot of young Hollywood, a lot of inter-studio politics, but it was fun. To see Coldplay and the Wayne’s World skit with Mike Myers was pretty cool.”
Ben Lyons, movie critic, E! Entertainment Television

“The Pussycat Dolls were great. I thought in person it would go really slow, but the show kept moving pretty well. They had a guy come out during the breaks that got everyone riled up.”

Clive Davis's Guests Wowed by Alicia Keys

Grammy-related events took over Hollywoodland's social calendar this past weekend, and on Saturday night, Clive Davis's annual party at the Beverly Hilton was home to more than 1,000 guests, including singers Alicia Keys, Usher, and Fergie.

Planners transformed the ballroom with a neutral palette of beige and cream, with white hydrangeas and roses adding to the soft look. The menu included coconut shrimp and lobster-medallion canapés with caviar, grilled chicken breast filled with wild rice and sautéed wild mushrooms, and chocolate-dipped strawberries and truffles. The evening's performances, however, handpicked by the J Records founder, are what the night is known for, with newbie singer Leona Lewis, the Foo Fighters, Josh Groban, Andrea Bocelli, and Keys all taking the stage. We polled a few guests throughout the evening to get their take on the event. MORE >>

Starlight Starbright Staffers Like Their Family-Friendly Party

It's holiday party time, so we're asking employees what they think about their companies' bashes. (That's the point, right?)

An over-the-top internal bash for a nonprofit might seem dubious, so along with employees, the Starlight Starbright Children’s Foundation invited the org's beneficiaries and their families to its big holiday event last night. CBS Television City hosted the party for 400, which brought out M.C. and Star 98.7 DJ Lisa Foxx, Disney Channel actors, and costumed Santa and Mrs. Claus characters. This is what staffers and guests thought of the democratic approach to the holiday event.

“We don’t have a big holiday party—we don’t do a fancy night out for the staff—but coming here is better than going to some fancy party. Just seeing the kids open their presents, that’s the best part. I'm having a great time.”
Stephanie Schneider, corporate accounts manager

“How can you not love it? This is really what doing the holidays are about to us. It's really about them, not about our office. It's about making the most memorable night for these kids, because they need it.”
Christina Murphy, director of events and celebrity relations

“Tonight is very fun because of the arts and crafts. They have a lot of Christmas things.”
Edna, 11

"A lot of the other holiday parties are for people having fun for themselves. Not that there’s anything wrong with that—you're supposed to be happy. But we have the opportunity where we [the staff] can enjoy ourselves with other people who aren’t able to enjoy themselves throughout the year. Here, we have an event where we can share.”

Fekkai Staffers Like Venue, Vodka

It's corporate holiday party time, so we're asking employees what they think about their company's bashes. (That's the point, right?)
Although the Beverly Hills Frederic Fekkai salon offers private event space—the rooftop terrace and café can hold 200 guests for receptions—the company took to local spot Nic’s Restaurant & Martini Lounge for its annual holiday party. Despite last night’s downpour, a bevy of well-coifed stylists, staffers, and Fekkai himself ventured to Nic’s, where they congregated in the lounge and sampled an assortment of premium vodkas from the venue’s refrigerated Vodbox room.

We caught up with staffers as they spilled onto the rainy sidewalk for cigarette breaks. While Fekkai couldn’t speak with us because he had a flight to catch (he politely apologized), most staffers took the time to tell us about their holiday celebration, and a few—we’re guessing they might have had their share of vodka shots—even invited us inside. Here’s what we heard.

“I actually think this year’s party is very good. It’s different, we’ve never had it here before, so it’s a step in the right direction. I’ve been with Fekkai for six years: three years in New York, three years in L.A. The holiday parties in New York were really good only because the staff was really big, so it was a bigger event. But this one is more intimate, and it’s just very different—a good different. Great choice of venue this year. “
—Katie, colorist

“It must be a great time—that guy is puking on the sidewalk. I’m having a great time. They have a chilled vodka room in the back where you can do shots—that’s an added bonus.”
—Eddie, manager

"We’re enjoying our time and partying a little bit. It’s just something simple. We have the back room. It’s open bar and we have appetizers. Unfortunately they didn’t do anything special with the decor. When you do a party with people you work with every day, [spending time with them in the evening] is a little bit of your duty. But it’s good karma. You have to come to these things with an open mind and just make a little effort to be here.”

CEG Employees Like Holiday Party Games, Snoop Dogg

It’s corporate holiday party time, so we’re checking in with employees to see what they think about their company’s bashes. (That’s the point, right?) Here’s our first report of the season.

About 2,500 Comcast Entertainment Group employees and their guests converged at the Sony Pictures Studios on Tuesday. The event marked the first holiday party under the consolidated company CEG—which joins E! Entertainment, the Style Network, and G4—and treated attendees to casino games using fake money, margarita bars (featuring drinks made according to CEG president and C.E.O. Ted Harbert's personal recipe), and some star sightings (Snoop Dogg made an appearance and wished guests happy holidays toward the end of the evening).

Some guests shared their opinions on the party, as well as their thoughts on how it compared to their last corporate bash:

“It’s been very hard to get everybody in the Comcast company together at one time, so it’s great to have everybody in one room. Clinton Sparks is always a phenomenal DJ. We had him at the summer party as well, and he’s always awesome to have. We have Snoop Dogg in the house tonight, which is kind of random and fun and everybody seems to be really excited about that. The lights are pretty, the atmosphere is very festive, and the drinks are great. Everyone’s getting crunked.”
Jacey Dupree, assistant to the producers/talent, E! News and Daily 10, E! Entertainment

“Oh, my god, this is about a bajillion times better than last year’s G4 party. It’s a large atmosphere with fun gaming, great drinks, and food. The desserts have been amazing. Pumpkin cheesecake is awesome. I have one negative: The Style Channel people are way too fashionable. All the people from the Style Channel are so hot. They make the people from G4 look like the nerds that we really are.”
Chris Gore, host, Attack of the Show, G4, 32

“At the last holiday party we had for G4, they opened the doors to the public at 10 o’clock. We were there for a couple of hours and then the general public comes in and it’s like, ‘What happened to our party?’ It’s like night and day with this party. This is a real party and it makes you feel good because we deserve this. We work hard.”

What Was the Best Thing About the Victoria's Secret Bash?

Photo: Steve Granitz/WireImage.com
The sky-high production that is Victoria's Secret's annual fashion show will not air on CBS until December 4, but guests witnessed the feat in person at the Kodak Theatre last night, followed by a party upstairs at the ballroom. It was the second time the lingerie retailer held the event in Los Angeles, after a move from New York.

At the show, Selita Ebanks modeled a $4.5 million bra set, and the Spice Girls, Will.i.am, and Seal were among the performers. (It will be the Spice Girls' TV debut since reuniting, and Will.i.am was a stand-in for scheduled performer Kanye West after the death this week of West's mother.) Done and Dusted produced the show, and Edward Razek, Monica Mitro, Ian Stewart, and Hamish Hamilton are its executive producers. Bolthouse/SBE produced the pink-lit after-party, with vast savory and sweet spreads from Wolfgang Puck. We asked guests for their opinions on highlights of the spectacle.

What's the most striking part of the fashion show or party?
"This show was more fun and exuberant than other ones I've seen. Years ago [in 2002], PETA got on the stage with an anti-fur thing—you never saw that on TV. But this year was totally smooth and without a hitch. It was like watching the Rockettes."
—Glenn, freelance makeup artist

"The food's great at this party. It's set up really well, and everyone's flowing really easily. As for the show, the runway was this sparkly black gravel; it was very cool. And watching the girls walk on that surface was a feat unto itself."
—Lynn, guest

A Media Buyer Gives Her Take on Upfront Week

Our Upfront Week mole posing with Justin Chambers of Grey's Anatomy at the ABC after-party.
Our Upfront Week mole posing with Justin Chambers of Grey's Anatomy at the ABC after-party.
We gathered lots of media buyers’ impressions of Upfront Week, and as a whole, they tell a hectic, fun, sometimes contradictory story of the television networks’ annual sales pitches. For more consistent (yet just as subjective) view, we asked a supervisor at a major media buying firm to share her thoughts, day by day. Here's her take.

Monday
3 p.m., NBC presentation, Radio City Music Hall

It was fair. No one was really buzzing about the shows except Journeyman. They didn’t touch on their extensions like late-night and morning programming too much, and I think everyone was kind of grateful for that. They cut to the chase with the presentation.

5 p.m., NBC after-party, the Rink at Rockefeller Center
All the talent was at the party. [The casts] of Friday Night Lights, The Office, Heroes, and new shows like Journeyman and Life. The party was like it’s always been: It’s really nice because it’s at Rockefeller Center, and it’s never too crowded. When I walked in, four people from The Office were just standing there. MORE >>

Media Buyers Like Shrimp, Debate Whose Is Best

ABC opened its upfront with an Ugly Betty musical number.
ABC opened its upfront with an Ugly Betty musical number.
ABC/Donna Svennevik
Every May, a swarm of media buyers, ad execs, talent, and other assorted television-industry types hits New York for Upfront Week, the broadcast networks’ yearly presentations of their fall schedules. In the hope of snagging millions in advertising dollars, the usually hard-sell presentations are star-studded, and often stat-studded. And the parties that follow are staged to wow, with plenty of photo ops with network talent, mountains of shrimp, and free-flowing booze. While both attendees and the press noted some fiscal restraint on the part of the networks this year, the broadcasters weren’t exactly serving Saltines and cold cuts. After all, Advertising Age called Upfront Week a “$9 billion annual event that is the financial pivot of the prime-time TV business.”

NBC kicked off the week at Radio City Music Hall, promising to “skip the song and dance” and get people out in under an hour and a half (they did). CBS showed its wares at Carnegie Hall, with help from CSI: Miami star David Caruso, who was happy to make fun of his on-screen persona. Pushing the multiplatform angle, the net also aired a YouTube video of Caruso’s over-the-top one-liners on CSI and had ad sales president JoAnn Ross address the crowd as an avatar. At Avery Fisher Hall, ABC staged a boffo opening musical number starring the cast of Ugly Betty and wrapped the presentation by giving away a plasma-screen TV (a tie-in to the net’s upcoming show National Bingo Night) and filling the theater with a thunderous marching band. Fox kept it short and sweet, enlisting Keifer Sutherland to pretape a presentation addressing Fox entertainment president Peter Liguori as 24’s Jack Bauer. (“Keep it to an hour. ... You’re on the clock, Mr. President.”) In possibly a record for any upfront presentation, that’s all the network took. (Perhaps it was a mea culpa: Last year’s clocked in at an agonizing three hours.) Among the other networks vying for attention and ad buys were Telemundo, Univision, the CW, ESPN, and Broadband Enterprises. So how did they do? Did the networks get their money’s worth? Well, our opinions don’t really matter, so we sought out the ones that do: those of the attendees who slosh through the overcrowded week each year. (“If you cut my finger off,” one high-level ad buyer said, “you can count the rings of how many upfronts I’ve been to.”) Here’s what they had to say, sometimes on the record, sometimes under the cover of anonymity, and sometimes as they spoke to another guest, not realizing we were listening.
