Steve & Barry's Surf Collection Launches, Aptly, on the Sand

It can be hard to pluck busy journalists from their desks in the middle of a workday to attend an event—but perhaps not as hard if you lure them to a serene beach on a mild Los Angeles afternoon. That's the approach taken by organizers behind the launch of Wonderwall, surfer Laird Hamilton's surf and skate apparel collection with Steve & Barry's stores, which took to Paradise Cove beach yesterday afternoon.
Steve & Barry's fashion PR director Martin Higgins and associate PR director Rebecca Fitts tapped Shannon Davidson to produce the press event for about 40, where print and broadcast journalists could interview Hamilton in front of colorfully decorated cabanas right on the sand. "It was a lifestyle-driven event. It was really about creating a beach environment where Laird was comfortable talking to the media," Davidson said. "Paradise Cove is absolutely beautiful."

New Nokia Products Make Movies (and Take Drink Orders) at Gen Art Event
|
FROM CHICAGO
On Wednesday, a face-painted man wearing a pink shirt and toting a green water gun wove his way through the stylish crowd assembled at the River East Art Center for Gen Art and Nokia's Art in Motion event. The colorful guest was part of one of three films that were shot on site, as emerging filmmakers commissioned by Gen Art made short movies using Nokia's N95 8GB device.
The moviemaking was only one of the ideas that Gen Art Chicago's regional event director, Laura Lachman, cooked up for the event, which was intended to showcase the cutting-edge capabilities of Nokia's N95 and N810 devices.
Guests had the option of ordering drinks the old-fashioned way (by bellying up to the bar) or by taking a more technological route: Nokia reps standing at three highboys held N810 Internet tablets that they used to type in guests' drink requests. The orders went electronically to a computer behind the bar, and a server brought the drink orders to the tables within a matter of minutes.

Bar Association Favors Powell's Catering, Eddie's Printing for Meetings
|

Paulette Fontanez co-manages a department of seven meeting planners for the Los Angeles County Bar Association, working on meetings that offer continuing legal education for bar association members. Fontanez oversees approximately 350 meetings per year.
Catering: “Powell’s Catering is by far my favorite caterer. We’ve been doing business with the people there for years, so they automatically know what we need. They whip up some surprises for us once in a while that really knock other caterers out of the park. They know what dishes we like, remember what we don’t, cater to personal preferences, and are sensitive to food allergies. They’re so easy to work with—there really is no competition."
Printing: “Eddie’s Printing. The company's turnaround is miraculously quick, [and it is able to] get us 300-page, double-sided bound documents back within a day.”

Anthem Emails Memory Book From Coachella Pool Party
|
 |

If your event generates as much hipster chatter as does Anthem magazine's Coachella pool party, why let it die, when you could rehash it ad infinitum instead? In a sure-to-be-forwarded e-newsletter yesterday, more than a week after the two-day event wrapped, the magazine sent out what it called a "memory book," a collection of photographs taken by partygoers professional and amateur. The magazine also assembled and distributed a short video from seven hours of footage taken at the weekend-long event, which includes shots of Levi's gift suite, DJs spinning in a booth above the pool, and a cannonball diving contest that included one naked guest among the swimsuit-clad ones. —Alesandra Dubin

Victoria's Secret Launches Feminine, Flirty Fragrance With Party to Match
|
 |
Victoria's Secret's girly fragrance launch Photo: Dale Wilcox for BizBash |
|
Victoria's Secret, with its unabashedly frilly, girlie merchandise and pink-on-pink packaging, is a brand that knows itself. So when the retailer launched its Heavenly Kiss fragrance at Beso last night, the brand threw a party that embraced the flirty, romantic notions behind its commercial success. "The goal was to make it romantic and feminine, consistent with the fragrance messaging," said Kate Foster, Victoria's Secret's New York-based associate vice president for marketing and PR. "Plus, the fragrance makes a perfect gift for Mother's Day, so the timing was right."
The choice of venue was a gimme, since its name means "kiss" in Spanish, and Eva Longoria Parker's new spot with chef Todd English is one of the most-discussed new spaces in town.
