6 New Venues for Los Angeles Holiday Parties
Westside Tavern
Photo: Randall Michaelson
Based on our recent
readers poll
, it looks like holiday parties might be back in season after largely disappearing in 2008. Here's where to go for end-of-year festivities.
1.
Esquire
recently named
Westside Tavern
to a "15 Places Not to Miss"
list
—so try one of its two private rooms (or both) for a buzz-worthy holiday party. The divisible private space has a large walnut bar, cork walls, and a wall covered in lateral slices of tree trunks—for an appropriately wintry look—and the rooms connect to hold as many as 100 people for a seated event. Westside Tavern offers American comfort food made from California ingredients.

3 New Restaurants for Autumn Alfresco Dining
Vinolio
Photo: Courtesy of Vinolio
In some parts of the world, the weather is already too cool to dine outside—but Angelenos live by a different set of rules. These three new restaurants offer patios and outdoor dining for alfresco entertaining in the fall.
1. Opened in September,
Vinolio
made its debut in Cahuenga corridor, right in the midst of Hollywood’s night spots. Chef Andy Pastore designed the menu, mainly Italian items such as specialty pizzas and sliced meats, plus traditional Italian desserts like tiramisu and panna cotta. Vinolio also has a full wine list, and its kitchen stays open for late-night bites. Exposed brick walls, rustic wooden tables, and antique embellishments give the eatery an Old World feel. The space is available for buyouts, and holds as many as 200 people. A private dining area is available on the back patio, which holds 50 for seated events.

Amid the fanfare of the
premiere
for
Michael Jackson's This Is It
, which showed on all 14 of its screens on October 27,
Regal Cinemas
at
L.A. Live
officially opened for business. The 140,000-square-foot theater complex is the new West Coast flagship of Regal Cinemas, and its opening marks the near completion of the L.A. Live development.
The new venue includes what it bills as the largest theater with stadium seating in the country. There are 3,795 seats in all, ranging from 100 to 290 per auditorium; each auditorium has high-back reclining seats, retractable cup holders, and high-end digital projection and sound systems. The complex also houses four auditoriums equipped with Real D-3D digital projection systems, making them ready to handle 3-D film releases.

Night Vision Entertainment to Transform Vibiana Into Pop-Up Nightclub for Halloween
Event production, marketing, and promotion company
Night Vision Entertainment
will take over
Vibiana
downtown for a pop-up nightclub dubbed Pandora during Halloween week. The pop-up club, which opens on October 27 in the historic former cathedral, will offer entertainment during its three-night limited run, including a show on Halloween night from rapper Asher Roth (of "I Love College" fame). Also for the Halloween night event, Night Vision will donate a portion of sales to Madonna's Raising Malawi charity; Madonna has agreed to match funds raised.
The space's other events include a performance by the Darling Stilettos (with Matt Sorum of Guns N' Roses), and a masquerade ball with live performance by a '20-style big band and flapper dancers. Night Vision also has plans to take the Pandora concept to other major U.S. cities.

Dolce Group's Wonderland Opens in Hollywood With Fanciful Decor, Room for 400
Wonderland
Photo: Geno Nicholas Photography
The Dolce Group has opened a new 4,200-square-foot nightspot,
Wonderland
, in Hollywood with an—you guessed it—
Alice in Wonderland
theme (the space was planned to be named Alice until shortly before it opened).
Event Eleven
's Tony Schubert, the man behind the look of Dolce's
Les Deux
and
Ketchup
, designed the space, which has a capacity of about 400.
"The idea was to take my interpretation of what
Alice in Wonderland
would be [and make it into] nightclub form—but I really wanted to design a club for longevity, so I needed to really deal with that fine line of keeping the club really sexy [and design heavy while building in] some longevity into the look," Schubert said. "It's just a really wide open space. It flows."

2 New Nightspots for Fall Entertaining
SBE's new Mi-6
Photo: Shawn Bishop
Two new high-design clubs are among this fall's new nightlife offerings. Here's a look inside.
1.
SBE
's new nightclub,
Mi-6
, opened in September in the former Foxtail space. A significant departure from that venue's opulent Art Deco look, Mi-6 has a modern design with lighting along the walls in striped arrangements. The West Hollywood space has booth seating, dual dance floors, and a layout on three levels. The space has a total capacity of about 400, with V.I.P. areas, multiple full-service bars, and smoking patios. There is an AEW sound system and DJ booth with built-in Serato. LEDs light the dance floor. Speciality cocktails use high-end and organic ingredients. Valet parking is available.

Esquire
Names the Bazaar at SLS Restaurant of the Year
The Bazaar by José Andrés
in the
SLS Hotel at Beverly Hills
continues to amass accolades, with the latest big acknowledgment coming from
Esquire
magazine, which selected the venue as its restaurant of the year.
“That
Esquire
would give this award to the Bazaar demonstrates that Spanish cooking, both modern and traditional, really has a place in America. This kind of restaurant could only have succeeded in a city like Los Angeles, one of the most creative places on earth,” said chef José Andrés in an announcement. “It is an amazing honor for everyone on the team that worked so hard to realize this project.”

Malibu's Sunset Restaurant Overhauls Decor, Amps Up Event Offerings
The Sunset Restaurant
Photo: Jim McHugh
The Sunset Restaurant
, a former cottage that offers million-dollar oceanfront views in every direction, first opened in 2003, but has just fully overhauled its interior decor—and is shifting its focus toward event bookings and buyouts.
The Malibu beachfront location makes the space prime for event bookings, and it can accommodate about 300 guests for receptions, including the use of the adjacent outside space. The venue is also open to multiday bookings for extended corporate programming, like the
beach house pop-ups
that have taken to Malibu of late. Kelly Ann Maurice is the director of events and oversees the bookings.
