Night Vision Entertainment to Transform Vibiana Into Pop-Up Nightclub for Halloween
Event production, marketing, and promotion company Night Vision Entertainment will take over Vibiana downtown for a pop-up nightclub dubbed Pandora during Halloween week. The pop-up club, which opens on October 27 in the historic former cathedral, will offer entertainment during its three-night limited run, including a show on Halloween night from rapper Asher Roth (of "I Love College" fame). Also for the Halloween night event, Night Vision will donate a portion of sales to Madonna's Raising Malawi charity; Madonna has agreed to match funds raised.
The space's other events include a performance by the Darling Stilettos (with Matt Sorum of Guns N' Roses), and a masquerade ball with live performance by a '20-style big band and flapper dancers. Night Vision also has plans to take the Pandora concept to other major U.S. cities. —Alesandra Dubin

Esquire Names the Bazaar at SLS Restaurant of the Year
The Bazaar by José Andrés in the SLS Hotel at Beverly Hills continues to amass accolades, with the latest big acknowledgment coming from Esquire magazine, which selected the venue as its restaurant of the year.
“That Esquire would give this award to the Bazaar demonstrates that Spanish cooking, both modern and traditional, really has a place in America. This kind of restaurant could only have succeeded in a city like Los Angeles, one of the most creative places on earth,” said chef José Andrés in an announcement. “It is an amazing honor for everyone on the team that worked so hard to realize this project.”

The W Hollywood Rendering: Courtesy of the W Hollywood
With the fall season approaching, a slate of new venues is under construction around t own—some of which have been in the pipeline for years. Here's a sample of what to expect as summer gives way to autumn and winter in Los Angeles.
1. The opening on Monday of a job placement office for hundreds of workers to staff the new W Hollywood property generated more buzz and optimism—not to mention news coverage—surrounding the venue . When it opens in December, the venue will offer 10,000 square feet of meeting space and 25,000 square feet of overall special event space. The W will also offer a pool with day beds, cabanas, and a bar, and a variety of restaurant and nightlife offerings, including Drai's Hollywood from Las Vegas nightlife impresario Victor Drai.
2. Further west, Haute Los Angeles is a West Hollywood nightclub and lounge with an expected opening date in October. Couture fashion and style have influenced the decor and feel of the space, which will cater to special events. It is the first Los Angeles venture from international hotelier Bert Hurstfield.

Grauman's Chinese Theater Up for Sale, Mann to Vacate Westwood Venues
Warner Brothers and Viacom are increasing their efforts to unload some local movie theaters, including Hollywood's storied Grauman's Chinese in Hollywood, according to The Hollywood Reporter . Decision makers at Cinemerica—the joint venture of Warner Brothers and Viacom that operates Mann Theatres—think it's the right time to sell at least one Mann venue, with Grauman's and the Criterion Theatre on the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica at the top of the list of possibilities. (The visibility of and traffic around Grauman's—a popular choice for movie premieres —is also increasing after the August 1 opening of Madame Tussauds next door.)
Mann will vacate the Bruin and Village theaters, two Westwood venues often used in conjunction for simultaneous screenings at movie premieres (and often divided into A-list and B-list crowds) in March unless negotiations extend those leases. The fall season will likely bring another challenge to the Westwood theaters: Regal Cinemas expects to open a 14-plex at L.A. Live that will vie for the big premieres. —Alesandra Dubin

First Peek: Nightlife Vets Pennings, Terzian, and Toll to Reopen Las Palmas in the Fall
Nightlife vets Loyal Pennings, John Terzian, and Brian Toll (of LAX and H.wood fame) have announced they will reopen the lounge and restaurant Las Palmas—a Hollywood hot spot a decade ago—in the late fall. "Las Palmas was one of the first upscale nightclubs east of Highland," Toll said in a statement. "With the massive growth in Hollywood and resurgence of really high-level restaurants, lounges, and nightclubs, the new Las Palmas will be in good company."
The new Las Palmas will evoke some of the signature decor concepts of the space's former incarnation in a design that's a little kitschy with modern touches like low lanterns, plush seating, and colorful accents. "So often in Hollywood, the same venues are recycled; new owners come in and rename the place to try to recreate it over and over, aiming to be the newest and hottest spot. With Las Palmas, we want to bring back the simplicity of the past. Las Palmas was a cool lounge, a fun restaurant, and a vibrant nightlife scene that we know Angelenos remember," said Terzian. —Alesandra Dubin

FROM NEW YORK
After debuting in May, the car-free areas on Broadway are still in the development stages—lingering traffic cones cordon off some sections, and the lawn chairs in Times Square will soon be replaced with sturdier ones—but the city has already started renting them out for events and promotions. The move is a positive one for New York—the usage brings in an additional revenue stream—as well as for planners and producers, who value the added visibility. And according to The New York Times , 20 events have made use of the spaces since May, including Monday afternoon's public promotion from VH1 .

Dolce Closing—for Now—to Pave Way for Philippe Chow
Monday, June 29, will be Dolce's last day at Melrose and Sweetzer Avenues. Dolce Group partners Lonnie Moore and Mike Malin are looking to reopen the Italian restaurant in another West Hollywood location, to be determined. Dolce Group director of marketing and PR Marissa Knies Lanier explained: "Philippe [Chow] from New York made them an offer they could not refuse, so they are taking over the space." Word spread in February that Chow was looking for West Hollywood real estate.
"The Dolce Group has always been about reinvention, and Moore and Malin look forward to continuing to expand their restaurant and nightlife empire with such concepts as Rare 120° in Vegas and Les Deux in Hollywood," Knies Lanier said.
