More than 500 Broward and Palm Beach County philanthropists turned out Friday night for the opening of Junior Achievement of South Florida’s new 58,000-square-foot experiential learning center, which is intended to teach local students about the economy and money management. To show guests where their money went, producers kept the party inside, holding a street fair-style party in the facility's three indoor miniature cities.

Donald Braun of Donald Braun Events LLC staged the majority of the event in the center's park space, hanging paper lanterns and twinkle lights, adding grass-covered bars from Ronen Bar and Furniture Rental, and setting up a stage where the Marcia Mitchell Band performed throughout the evening. On the faux streets in front of the storefronts, Braun added colorful lounge furniture groupings. MORE >>

To commemorate its 130th anniversary, Florida Memorial University turned its annual scholarship fund-raising dinner into a gala and found a new venue in Miami Beach’s Fontainebleau. A sold-out crowd of 500 showed up Friday night to see the changes in effect.

“[The dinner] was at the Broward Country Convention Center last year, and we wanted to move to Miami Beach to be more mainstream and in the hottest location in South Florida,” said Joyce R. Forchion, director of public affairs for the university, who served as event co-chair. “We usually have a scholarship banquet, but we put a spin on it this year and upgraded it to a gala because of the anniversary.” MORE >>

Since 1996, the Miami Dolphins cheerleaders have produced a swimsuit calendar and launched its sale with an unveiling party for the ladies' friends and family, and the team's corporate partners. As scantily clad women naturally draw attention, the unveiling event has grown over the years from an intimate dinner to the more than 600-person cocktail party and fashion show held at Casa Casuarina on Friday night.

“I think because of the sexy, high-end way we [present the calendar] with a [swimsuit] fashion show, people get really excited to see it,” said Dolphins cheerleader coordinator and director Emily Newton, adding later that more than 100 additional people attended this year compared to last year. “It’s an invite-only event, but I had fans emailing me asking how they can get a ticket, so I expect to see a lot of people on the street.” MORE >>

Several hundred members of the media and V.I.P. guests gathered at Dolphin Stadium this morning for a special press conference with Jimmy Buffet and Dolphins owner Stephen Ross. The duo announced that Dolphin Stadium—home of the Miami Dolphins, Florida Marlins, and Miami Hurricanes—has officially been renamed Landshark Stadium. The name recognizes the facility’s new partnership with Buffet’s Margaritaville enterprise, which produces Landshark Lager with partner Anheuser-Busch.

“Jimmy Buffet is known and loved worldwide for his music and his portrayal of the tropical lifestyle that is synonymous with South Florida, and we are honored to have him bring his unique culture to our organization, “ Ross said. MORE >>

Thousands of weekend shoppers and Miami Dolphins fans stopped by Center Court at Aventura Mall on Saturday to watch 80 women participate in the final round of auditions for the football team’s cheerleading squad. The Dolphins' official audiovisual supplier, Southern Audio Visual, set up a 576-square-foot stage for the five-and-a-half-hour event. Held at the mall for the for the past five years, the event allows the fans to become part of the experience, said to Emily Newton, the team's cheerleading coordinator and director, who organized the event.

“For us the [fans] are the biggest critics. They know who they like, and we want their opinion,” said Newton. Through three rounds of auditions, judges narrowed down a field of more than 500 applicants to the final 80 who performed on Saturday. The fans were then given a chance to voice their opinions in the “Text Your Vote” event sponsored by radio station 99.9 KISS Country. Fans could also vote online for their favorite cheerleader from April 9 to 17. MORE >>
