Art Basel Miami Beach, the international art fair that attracts more than 40,000 people annually, will kick off on December 2 with a V.I.P. Vernissage preview at the Miami Beach Convention Center, the headquarters of the four-day art fair. Within Art Basel will be 10 programs named for the type of art being showcased or the informational programming they provide ("Art Video," "Art Nova").

For the 2009 show, organizers have redesigned the layout of the convention center’s main exhibit floor and created a new 40,000-square-foot temporary exhibition structure on the sand at Collins Park. MORE >>

Luxury cars took center stage in Miami last week as Porsche launched its newest model and Infiniti unveiled a concept car at separate events within 24 hours of each other. To host their parties on October 21 and 22, respectively, the brands partnered with brands such as Piaget, Jimmy Choo, and W Hotels.

On Wednesday, Coral Gables luxury car dealership the Collection hosted the South Florida launch of the Porsche Panamera, the company’s first four-door model, with a party for nearly 500. “The Panamera is a very substantial entry into the [luxury car] marketplace, so it’s very important to showcase the car and launch it to this market,” said Ken Gorin, president of the Collection. Gorin added that the Collection is one of the largest Porsche dealerships in the world and highest in sales. MORE >>

Luxury cars, jazz, cigars, and 600 friends of Miami magazine and the New World Symphony occupied the W South Beach’s Wet pool area on Saturday for the magazine’s second anniversary party.

The Collection, a high-end care dealership in Coral Gables, parked six luxury cars including a Maserati GT, Aston Martin V8, and Jaguar FXR in the hotel’s main driveway just outside the entrance to the pool area. "The W is so new that we wanted to come up with a different idea [for the party]," said Heidi Kellner, Miami's marketing director. "When we saw the outdoor space, we thought it would be great for a car sponsor to showcase, so we reached out to the Collection and they were really excited about it." MORE >>

As Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim began last night at the Raleigh for the fashion industry and press, Miami magazine hosted its second annual consumer-focused swimwear event, Splashion, at LIV nightclub. More than 700 people attended, triple the number of last year.

“There is so much buzz going on around [Mercedes-Benz] Swim Week, which is so industry oriented, that with our event we wanted to open it up to the consumers,” said Miami’s marketing director, Heidi Kellner. “[Splashion] is a celebration of the whole Swim Week in Miami and really involving the community in a [swimwear] event so they can go see what’s on the runway and will be in the stores.” MORE >>

Amigos for Kids Domino Night Surpasses Last Year's Fund-Raising Dollars

Children’s charity Amigos For Kids’ annual celebrity domino night fund-raiser, sponsored by financial institution ING, took place on Saturday night at exotic zoo Jungle Island. Through print, radio, and television advertising sponsorships, the event had grossed about $300,000—in line with last year's post-event tally—before the doors even opened on Saturday night.

“The bottom line is what you net, and the great thing about this year is that we are going to net more than last year,” said Amigos executive director, Rosa Plasencia. Final numbers confirmed the event had a 21 percent increase in the net amount going to the charity. MORE >>

Gen Art’s annual Shop Miami event brings fashion-focused residents to the Moore Building every summer for discounted goods created by local emerging designers. While about 1,000 people turned out last night as expected, the event’s regular format changed from last year with the omission of its fashion show.

“We scaled back [this year] and really wanted to focus on the designers since it is a tough economic environment,” said Gen Art’s Miami regional director of events, Andrea Aberegg. “This way the attention is all on [the designers].” MORE >>

Share Our Strength held its fourth annual South Florida Great America Bake Sale at Aventura Mall on Sunday, drawing more than 3,500 to Center Court. Overseen by local Share Our Strength representatives, Great American Bake Sales around the country are traditionally held on a smaller scale at local community centers, neighborhoods, or bakeries. Wanting to attract more people to the South Florida event, chef Allen Susser of Chef Allen’s in Aventura coordinated the charity's first mall-based sale at Aventura Mall in South Florida in 2006, a format that Share Our Strength's national office took to the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota, in 2008.

Even in the current economy, Susser secured more local sponsors than in previous years, including Pazzo Bakery and the Nerdel Company, an educational cartoon company that donated 250 books and branded items that Share Our Strength sold at the event. “It was a little harder than in past years [to get sponsors], but it takes perseverance at any time," said Susser, who worked with Agency 21 Consulting to recruit sponsors.
