Event Security: The Twitter Effect

Texting, blogging, and online social networking have already made it a breeze for guests to send out tips to their friends and readers on scoring access to private parties. Now, with the increasing popularity of Twitter, the volume of recipients is growing exponentially and the details are leaking in real time. Crashers, gawkers, and paparazzi have instant access to more information than they’ve ever had before—on an easy-to-search platform—and security professionals and planners agree that 140 characters are more than enough to cause some trouble.

Barry Meyerson, president of Manhattan-based security firm Meyerson Associates Inc., first noticed Twitter’s impact during New York Fashion Week in September 2008. As celebrities and partygoers shared details online, queues outside venues got longer, and throngs of paparazzi seemed thicker. MORE >>

Insufficient Security Causes Chaos at Dallas Reunion
Hell hath no fury like a Dallas fan scorned. And after hundreds of ticket-holding enthusiasts were shut out of the television series’ 30th anniversary party at the Southfork Ranch in Plano, Texas, Saturday night, fury is in no short supply.

Lax security let plenty of crashers waltz into the cast reunion before the fear of overcrowding prompted organizers to deny access to ticketed attendees. The aftermath sparked a public round of blame-tossing between venue management and event production. Event producer and Austin Media Group principal Jason Hardison explained to the Associated Press that a crowd of 4,000 (double the number that paid between $100 and $1,000 for various levels of access) overwhelmed the venue’s ill-equipped security. Security: How to Know If You're Paying Too Much
Photo: Andreas & Co. for BizBash
With the R word—that’s recession—being floated more these days than in recent years, planners may find themselves faced with some incredible shrinking budgets. That means trying to get more with less (even more than usual, that is), and security often seems like an easy place to trim expenses. But how many planners really know what affects the cost of securing an event? We talked to security professionals throughout the industry to identify the elements of an event that determine the price of security—and what you should know when considering how much you should pay.

The Venue: The specifics of the location can impact costs in a variety of ways. With more entrances and exits comes the need for more staff to guard those access points. Likewise, a space that’s broken up will dictate the need for more bodies. “If you have a large venue with more than one room and [a firm is] suggesting one person, that’s ineffective,” says Gabrielle Malman, general manager of TBA Global Securities in Washington, D.C.

Additionally, if a venue does not have a certificate of occupancy or is being used in a way that is not covered by its certificate of occupancy, such as a warehouse space hosting a party, a Temporary Public Assembly permit (as it’s called in New York City) or a similar document that specifies where fire guards must be stationed may be required. In some cases, this may not affect security costs. “My licensed event officers are also licensed FDNY fire guards, so [planners] don’t have to pay for two people for that post,” says Barry Meyerson, president of New York-based Meyerson Associates Inc. However, a fire guard may be needed for an area that wouldn’t ordinarily be covered by security, such as in a back stairwell, in which case the expense is unavoidable.

Don't Be Insecure
When it comes to my personal life, I don’t believe in security. I grew up on a farm. We never locked the door except on Christmas Day when we went to my grandparents’ house for dinner. (My mother had read an article that said cynical thieves lay in wait outside homes on Jesus’s birthday, looking to swoop in and sweep up.)

Later, my parents got robbed (not much, mostly furs), and now my mother’s house is like Fort Knox. You know the old saying: A conservative is a liberal who’s been mugged.

But I remain unfazed, despite having had residences of mine broken into three times. Once I awoke to find a stranger in my bedroom, rifling through my desk, and I wrestled him for the camera. I won with a broken toe. Another time I was held at gunpoint by three assailants in the vestibule of my Perry Street home; after relinquishing my wallet, I gave chase, assisted the police in catching them, and received a letter of commendation from New York District Attorney Robert Morgenthau.

Still, I never lock the door. MORE >>
